I wish I could find something reagan would love, I changed her to wellness for puppies & my poodle to wellness/purple- savannah is doing great on the adult food but reagan would not touch hers so I had to put her back on the other. I thought at first b/c what she originally was on was tiny enough for her to eat but I gave the wellness puppy the other day to my son for his new outside puppy & she wouldn't touch it at all either?? anyone else with wellness puppy food problems?

Foods that can harm dogs
 

Everyone should have a print out of the foods that dogs cannot eat, especially if the family gives them table food...Google a list that tells you the after effects...Sometimes they don't immediately hurt the animal, it's over a long period of time...In any case, you don't want to give anything that's proven to make them ill...They are too precious....

I switched my two from Canidae to Timberwolf Organics. While they would eat the Canidae, I could see they weren't very enthusiastic about it.

The first time I gave them Timberwolf, they both ate it without hesitation. It was the first time I ever saw them act like they enjoyed dog food. It's a super premium food that is carnivore-specific. And their website says that it's very palatable to dogs. Have a look at their website:

I feed Tessa (6mths) Orijen puppy and she seems to love it. I've noticed that her coat is nice and shiny and not as dry as it used to be when I first brought her home.

Purina One?
 

I have been feeding Purina one because the first ingrediant is chicken. Is this a bad choice???

Certainly a poor quality food. I started my first puppy on that (because I didn't know any better...), and now we are on Canidae. There are many great foods you can feed, but you will not find them at your petsmart or petco or wal-mart. Usually, they can be found at a grain store or a smaller-type boutique or holistic pet food store. Go to dogfoodanalysis.com and find one you like with 5-6 stars...good luck :thumbup:

We are using Innova Puppy, but have been considering switching to Nature's Variety Medallions in the near future. In doing so of course I want to consider all pros and cons. May I ask why you do not recommend the raw diet and your thoughts on it as well?

Yes, one of my concernes in bacteria. This does (for the most part) apply only to dogs with compromised immune systems but what I'd like to know is who is the judge of whether their immune system is compromised? I never thought Ellie had a compromised immune system until she was spayed and the internal sutures didn't dissolve as fast as they should. Her body didn't attack them right away. There is no way to be 100% sure. And are we positive that this only effects compromised dogs, I'm not convinced. Food poisoning is much more rare in dogs than humans...I agree, but how much more rare, I don't think anyone knows for sure.

Next, raw egg (which some prepackaged foods are held together with) can deplete your dog of biotin. I don't think there is a good reason to feed raw egg.

And, I have seen zero studies on if a raw fed dog lives significantly longer than a dog eating kibble or homecooked. If they are proven to live longer, than I might consider feeding it BUT this isn't the case so far (we only have testimonials and we have those from homecooked too) and I see no reason to put Ellie's health and life in danger by giving her a mouthful of bacteria-filled meat and hoping her immune system will take care of it. There is so much risk already feeding any food (homecooked, kibble) and I see no reason to add any additional to it.

I don't like dog food much either though. Homecooking is by far my favorite because the diet can be balanced with a bit less bacteria concern and dogs that eat homecooked can do very well on it. I say cook the meat and add a supplement...

For prey-model diets, add the rare occurence of bone obstructions to the list (which DOES happen) which could have been avoided by brushing their teeth and giving them food. Also, vitamins aren't added to prey model and the diet isn't the least bit balanced. I don't believe this last part is just an opinion at all.

So, I would like to see the dogs fed raw live significantly longer (and I don't just mean one or two of them) than dogs fed other foods. If that is the case, then it might be worth the risk.

We eat Evo small bites made by Natura. It is a grainless food and both are doing well on it. I am going to try to stay with a grain free if possible. I tried Orijen, but both had trouble with it, so switched to the Evo and doing great!!!!!!!! No one food works for every dog. In order to see the results of a particular food though, you have to feed it for atleast eight to ten weeks. Good Luck!!

I really appreciate your opinion and will take it into consideration when making a firm decision on LuLu's diet/nutritional needs.

I've really been interested in the Homecooked venue, but find the "figuring it out" part to seem overwhelming. I'm sure that it isn't nearly as complicated as it seems, but I would have to venture to guess that I am not the only one that finds the vagueness daunting.

Is there just a simple 1,2,3 tried and true method to the Homecooking question? If so, I know that I for one would be thrilled to have it clearly spelled out and/or to be directed to a specific link.

Again, I thank you for taking the time to help me try and understand this important diet and nutrition element. It is ultimately so important to their overall health and quality of life.

Diamond foods
 

We tested food extensively in our kennel to find what worked best with our girls....bear in mind, we breed so our girls tend to need a little more nutrients than others. That said, we settled on Taste of the Wild by diamond for our adult breeder females out of the breeding cycle. We moved our females in the breeding cycle to Diamond professionals small breed and our puppies to Diamond naturals puppy ..... Feedings are so much fun at my place.... (no one in my family will help me feed, I wonder why). I am very happy with the high end Diamond formulas..... I also feed Chicken soup for the puppy's soul(diamond) to rowdy (pictured).... cause he is spoiled rotten... We tested something like 22 formulas of various brands, even offering multiple bands at one feeding to see which the girls prefer. The results were pretty interesting. For anyone who feeds Blue Buffalo... our girls would eat all of the kibble except for the black ones... After every feeding, the little black ones would be in the bowl... I thought about tasting it, but changed my mind....;)
