yorkie girl spayed - please advise me! I am a new yorkie mom and have a new yorkie girl who is almost 5 months old. We intend to get her spayed. She currently weighs around 4 lbs. (not too small for this age I think). When is a good time for her to have the operation? We currently have an appointment for Aril 10 but this seems to me to be a little too early. The next available appt is not until the end of May. A friend was told (by a vet) that it's good too wait until she's gone into heat for the first time before having her spayed. Any advice on this matter would be appreciated. |
I am going to do the same for my baby soon. She is 3 1/2 mos. old right now. My vet said he is not going to go by her age. He is going to go by her teeth. (something about being more accurate on age) I think. She only weighs 2.8 lbs. now. (she's gonna hit the 3lb. mark soon!) But ,yea, I am worried about having it done. Anestesia (Spelling?) scares me with these little ones. |
The goal is to NOT let them go into heat before spaying because it increases their chances of getting mammary cancer. Some owners of larger breeds in particular wait though because spaying early can give them a "leggy" appearance (along with a possible increase in some health issues like osteosarcoma). Anytime after four months as long as they are over two pounds should be okay. I'd do it at five or six months personally. |

My Vet. recommends spaying at 6 months. My Razael was 6 months on the 5th and she goes in on the 2nd for her spay. I wanted to wait as long as possible so she can gain a bit more weight. |
i was told that they GAIN weight once the procedure is done.....is that a fact?:confused: |
i don't think its necessary that way, it will all depend on how much you feed her and on her activity level. If she doesn't eat more than what she needs she wont gain weight, just like us ;) |

oh my gosh! Now I'm terrified. I just got Cassie at 11 1/2 months, Her one yr birthday was last wed. the breeder never had her spayed. she was in heat when i got her. now her spaying appointment is this thurs. should i cancel her spaying. i dont want to worry about breast cancer for her. she is 1.8 lbs help! |

FUFUFASHIONS: Thanks ever so much for answering my panicky message. Well, I don't know now. Perhaps it is better not to spay her at all. She is not near any males and I watch her like a hawk. I carry her every where, and if she were intact and went into heat I just would not take her out for that time. She is an indoor yorkie anyway. If we go to any yorkie meetups I would be verrrrry diligent. I am now anyway so the chances she'll get "caught" are almost non exisistant. Are there any other down sides to having her intact other than pregnancy? Thanks in advance. Shelllie:-) |
both of mine were spayed before going into first heat. my vet told me that it is better to do it before than after. |
i would still recommend having her spayed...she will be healthier and happier. Their heat last 3 weeks and it can really get messy. She will need to wear diapers. If she did get out, she would most likely get raped. :eek: I don't think you want that for your little girl.:( Unless you are going into the breeding business, i think every dog should be neutered or spayed. There are so many stray dogs and cats and millions are put down every year in shelters. Please leave the breeding to the professionals and get her spayed in a couple of months from now. She will be a much better pet temperment wise too. :) You won't have to worry about her this way. Many boarding/grooming places won't take them if they aren't spayed or neutered as they don't want that liability. You can walk her and take her places without worry too. I too had the same concerns as you are having. Unfortunately, I waited too late for Bella. She had her first heat cycle and it wasn't fun at all for her. She kept herself very clean, but all the swelling is no fun, plus she was very aware and uncomfortable, you could tell. I wish I had her spayed earlier. You won't regret it. It's the best for her health. The Vet also explained that sometimes, some of the swelling will be permanent and progressively increase with each cycle.:eek: |
