shedding? Hi all! Sir Halsey and I are new to the group. Halsey will be 6 yrs of age in July and is a standard size Yorkie. I have always thought that Yorkies don't shed, but lately, Halsey's hair has been matting and I have been finding clumps of hair all over all the time? Is it his age or the time of year? Any and all advice is welcome! |
i would be concerned that there is something wrong. my york barely sheds. i would check w/ your vet. |
Hi and welcome.... Does his hair come out when you brush it? Excessively I mean...or when you run your hair down his back? You said....you are finding clumps....so if it isn't coming out when you brush or pet him...I'm wondering if perhaps he's pulling it out? He may be allergic to any number to things and be itchy...therefore pulling out his hair. |
Think I'd check with the vet. When I brush my Yorkies every evening I don't even have to clean out the brush until I'm done with all three. They lose that little hair. Itches can make clumps of hair come out, too. My Pommie was doing that until I took corn, wheat, and eggs out of his diet. |
It could be It could be allergies. He has been biting and scratching himself lately. As far as his hair goes, it's more like matted hair that I find. This is just a recent development, as I never noticed it before. I am wondering if maybe it has to do with the heating. We recently moved (last September). Or could be the eggs. I eat hard boiled eggs almost everyday and he loves them too! Thanks all for the advice!:animal36 |
I'd have the vet do a blood and thyroid panel and if all is well, it is very possibly allergies. They may also want to look at mites/mange. |

I agree. He is getting close to that "magic" age, seven, where he will be considered a senior and need more extensive bloodwork including a thyroid panel. Hair loss is a sign of a thyroid imbalance. |
