pulling of adult teeth
 
Hi
I have a 6 year old female, Emily, and we have had problems with her teeth. I have her teeth cleaned when she gets her yearly shots. And for the passed 3 yrs. our vet has had to extract teeth. Yesturday he pulled 5. I asked him if there was anything I could do to help this problem and he said no. Even get it done twice a year, he said no, that it is a common problem with yorkies. Does anyone have any advice that may help? I give her chewies, but that hasn't help.

Wonderful people here. My Sami has had teeth issues most all her life. Even with twice yearly dental cleaning she to was losing teeth. So about a month ago she had infection starting in her molars that were left, she had all remaining teeth removed. Trying to brush and I say trying just didn't seem to help her. Well now she has no toofers but has healed and is getting along just fine. I think in her case it was genetics that played a roll. My other two are fine. If they need to come out it'll be OK. Just adjustment for both of you. Do you know how many she has left? This has been my experience but there are soo many knowledgeable people here that might have some good ideas for you to try.:animal-pa

Haven't they even suggested brushing?
I never brushed Ellie's teeth and at six years old a couple fell out and she had to have nine extracted. Now I brush everyday and use OraVet once a week and she hasn't had to have any more pulled.

Thanks for your replys.

I asked the vet did she have any teeth left and he said yes. I don't know how many, but there seems to be enough for eating. Brushing would be hard at this age, she seems to know when I need to give her antibotic and runs behind our couch. She is very smart and knows when I am up to something she will not like, like baths and such. She swims in Lake Michigan, but hates baths.

I really appreciate any help, she is our pride and joy. I know how all of you feel about your babys.

Hi Crystal

I have the equipment to brush her teeth, maybe she will let me do when I give her a bath. The vet said her teeth weren't rotten but loose in the gums. It is worth a try.

Sometimes Ellie runs behind a chair when she sees me with her toothbrush.:rolleyes:
I just force her to deal with it.
I started brushing when she was 5.
