Remove Dew Claws??? So Addaley is getting spayed on Friday...along with getting a small hernia fixed, 4 puppy teeth pulled and micro chipped. The breeder didn't remove her dew claws so I was thinking about getting them removed too but wasn't sure if we should. What do you guys think? Would you get them removed? Can they really get caught on something? I'm so undecided so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! |
What did you vet say? If she will allow you to clip them then you can forgoe the removal. You just have to be dilligent so they don't get long and snag or grow back into the skin. |

No I think once you pay attention and keep them trimmed she will be fine. I just hate trying to cut those because it's so close and a bit hard to cut well. I would personally opt to get them trimmed rather than removed. What does she mean loose? They aren't tight to the skin when I have seen them. |

I guess if it's very loose then it might be worth removing while she is under for her spay. |
My rescue still has her dewclaws, and just me personally, if she ever undergoes anesthesia (teeth cleaning or whatever) I will have them removed. It's just another pain in my butt to keep attentiont to them, and they serve no purpose. So if I were you, I'd definitely get it done. Shouldn't hurt the dog...it's probably, what, one stitch or something ? Anyway, hope that advice helps....good luck  |
If it's possible, I would definitely have them removed. Cali has 2 dew claws and it's awful when they get stuck on the carpet, my comforter, her bed, her blankets, etc. She SCREAMS bloody murder. Also, keep in mind that I cut her nails (dew claws included) every week! Once her dew claws are caught on something, it's really tricky to untangle them and it HURTS her. :( My poor baby screams so bad sometimes -- it just breaks my heart. :( |
I vote to remove them. One of mine had them and one just hung down and got caught every other time she was combed and then it would bleed. She also got them caught in the carpet |
