Skunk Breath Has anyone experienced this? BJ is 8 weeks old and his breath is horrible it smells just like a skunk sprayed it. I changed his food, brushed his teeth but nothing seems to help. Can anyone help? |
Sounds like puppy breath to me and I LOVE puppy breath! |
That's not puppy breath!!!!! I have the same problem with mine it's when the teeth start coming in. Make sure you start getting him use to brushing or wiping down his teeth. I use to think Peanut pooped in his mouth. He has double rows of teeth which I'm going to have pulled when he has his surgery. |
It's definately puppy breath. I personally LOVE the smell of puppy breath |

The double rows of teeth cause this; food gets trapped in the nooks and crannies. It's best to have milk teeth pulled when dog get neutered. This is not puppy breath, puppy breath smell good and clean. This is nasty. I just read that he's 8 weeks old, now I'm confused, I thought he was older. |
Yep. Got a case of puppy breath. Stinks to the new owner but heaven to veteran owners who miss the baby stage of their pets. |
Skunk breath I personally am going through the same thing - I love puppy breath and have had several dogs in my lifetime - my precious Chanel - has the most horrible breath - I am afraid of a stomach ailment - I even thought maybe it was her beard. She is being spayed next week and having two teeth removed. I hope that helps. Oh, she is only seven months old. Any one have any idea what this could be. Thanks.: |
If he's not eating poop, has no gum infections then I would guess it's coming from the stomach! Never delt with this before. Puppy breath is prue sweet. I would ask the vet. |
My vet said that in older dogs they can have acid reflux and you are smelling the acids from their stomach! I don't know if a small pup can have this though, I would ask your vet about it. |
It could be caused from several things...I would think given his age, it may be due to his adult teeth coming in, as others have mentioned. Or possibly something with his diet. I would recommend making sure to brush his teeth (for more reasons that one). Also, they make drops you can add to drinking water that freshen breath and help breakdown plaque. I use it with mine and swear by it--even our vet commented on how clean their teeth are. |
Gone Just an update BJ is 5 months old and his breath is now sweet smelling. It went away at about 3 months. I had asked the vet and he said puppy breath but I promise I have had lots of puppies and I have never had one smell like this. |
Yeah, I love puppy breath too for some reason. Even though it smells like those nasty little Vienna Sausages in the can...I still liked Chewie's baby breath, LOL I think if you're worried or u have a gut feeling that something may be wrong, a call to the vet is never a bad idea. Better to be safe than sorry. Good luck with the stank! heehee |
Have you considered a raw diet? Nature's Variety, Primal and some other great brands exist that prepackage raw meals and often this aids in smelly breath. If its coming from her stomach, the best thing to do is get her on a whole food/ raw diet. Ditto on everyone else's thoughts on retained milk teeth. My baby girl had retained many teeth and she had the most rancid breath, even on the raw diet. Now, three weeks after her spay/ teeth surgery, she finally has the lovely puppy breath everyone keeps mentioning. :p |
