Advice Please well. in may its that time a year for us to vaccinate. i don't know what to do. i only let the vet give the rabies, because he has to. i give the others (i do get them from my vet), but i spread them out. if i don't mine get sick, and very sore. i only get them the shots yearly because right now we are away from home at college, but will be moving home in june/july. and i always think about my dog back home at my parents on the farm. i gave her vaccinations, the year after i adopted her. she was utd when i got her. she hasn't had anything in a couple of years, and our stray dog has never had anything (they both are wormed and frontlined monthly)... they are the healthiest dogs. never had any health issues. so i'm torn... i don't know what to do... :confused: |
I would do puppy shots (DHPP) and then a booster at one year. After that it is a hard call. Some say give it every three years while others say that is too much. Some say do titer while others say they aren't accurate enough. There is no right answer. We are doing DHPP every three years with titers in between right now. I don't do bordatella at all. |
I was hoping you would reply, I was going to pm you... Bentley is 2, and Zoey will be 2 in August. They are both healthy as a horse. But I don't want to risk anything. So. I'm not sure. I'm still up in the air. Zoey is supposed to have hers in very beginning of April. But I am getting them on the same schedule, first of May. I guess I need to read some more into it. |

If it were my choice I'd probably titer both of them (for parvo and distemper) and if they come back low you may need to vaccinate again. If they come back high you could let it go for a couple years and have time to study about it. As long as they have had their one year boosters, it would also be okay to just skip the titers and wait two more years. |

Friday will need DHPP (distemper, hepatitis, parvo, parainfluenze). Also, rabies and bordatella if you want to give that. These should be spaced out by a week or two. Monday may need rabies depending on state law and bordatella (again only if you want to give it). DHPP could wait if you have been vaccinating for it all along. It all depends on what you're comfortable with. Lepto vaccine should only be given where there is extreme danger of the dog getting it. It is a dangerous vaccine that quite a few Yorkies can't tolerate (resulting in the occasion death...especially in pups). The benefits and risks have to be weighed. Lyme's disease would have to be a huge problem in my area to even consider it and since the vaccine may be linked to kidney damage, I probably would never give it. Giardia vaccine and corona vaccine aren't what I consider necessary and I wouldn't give them. My opinion only... Usually vets run a heartworm blood test once a year and a fecal one or two times a year. |
thanks so much for the info. Ellie May, thank you so much for the advice. I usually go in blindly and let them do whatever it is they say. Lyme is not a problem here. and I rarely take the pups to any wooded areas. I was hoping to get the 3 year rabies shot for Friday b/c I believe that was what I had done for Monday. I usually do not space their shots out b/c the vet visit alone is $50 from the get-go. Do you really suggest that I do space them out? The fecals are like $30-35 each. (Long Island is very expensive). I am printing out your advice and going to take it with me to the vet. I have seen my dentist's $2.4 million dollar home, I bet the vet's home is equal if not more. |

it's much easier and cheaper to prevent anything happening to a pet than to try and save or treat a sick pet ! i say prevention is the key all it takes is one sick stray or a wild diseased animal to make things change for the worse! not all vets are out to stick or overcharge and some do not make too much as you have to have the bills payed which doesnt always happen with people you just wouldnt believe how many drop a pet off for treatment and never come back and cannot be reached! |

I had the both babies in on Monday 3/24 for their shots. Monday is 5 and Friday is 1. Monday and Friday got shots for distemper-hepatitis (CAV-2), parvo, parainfluenza, rabies, and bordetella. Monday is fine. Two days later, (Wed. 3/26) Friday, started throwing up and has had loose stools. really loose. It is still happening, (the loose stools, and one of them threw up today, (I never can tell which one unless I see it) On different days, I gave her some Imodium, Centrine, and today gave her Amflora. These are meds given to them before for diarrhea -- I fed them their usual prescription dry low residue food. Today I gave them scrambled eggs, but Monday did not eat it, Friday gobbled the both dishes up (Less than ½ egg). Friday truly stinks. I had to bathe her butt 3 times yesterday, and twice today. You seem so knowledgeable, so I am asking you, could this be a reaction to the shots? I was giving it time to work through before taking them back to the vet. When I spoke with the office today, they said to wait and see. Do you have any advice? I did not hear back about the fecal samples (which were firm 8 days ago) so I assume no news is good news. They did not mention anything when I called, so I guess that is good. And although Friday is 2" shorter than Monday they each weigh 4.75 lbs. Friday is a chub-chub. Sorry if this is too long. I rarely bother anyone with health issues. My main question is: could this be a reaction to the shots? Thanks a lot for any help you can give me. |
Yes, anything strange within 48 hours (and it still is very possible after this) I would blame it on the vaccines. I would not wait more than two or three days to go to the vet if the stools are very loose or if there is vomiting. Have you giving PediaLyte? |
