My Yorkie Hates Flea/Tick Medicine I just have to ask anyone if their Yorkie acts like this. Last night, we were putting on Flea/Tick medicine on all the dogs. We did Gracie first and she chewed her bone the entire time. Then we did Bella and she had not a clue what was going on and then Lillie who was last.... well Lillie started getting on my couch and squirming all around and growling. She kept rubbing herself on the pillow and would not stop - grumbling the entire time. Well 3 hours later, she was still doing it. She was laying there like she was completely miserable and giving me the evil eye. This morning she is fine, but she cannot stand that medicine on her at all. By the way, this is not new that she is like this, but last night she was more dramatic than usual. I wish I had a video camera - she was such the drama queen. |
Why don't you try them on sentinel? That is a little one time a month pill.. |
Try giving her a bath with Dawn original. It kills fleas instantly. Was this the stuff that goes on the back of the neck. Murfee thinks I am killing him when I put that on him. |
Shelby Rose shakes and hides in corners the rest of the night when we put hers on. I'm thinking it's probably that plastic like smell of the medicine that she doesn't like so we started putting it on like half an hour before bedtime and she's fine the next morning and doesn't stress about it anymore (except that half hour she stills hides off in dark corners). |
I'd put water on her back in the same spot. If she does that after you put the water on her, she is just being silly. If she doesn't react to the water, she needs to come off the product immediately. All flea and tick medication (except Program/Sentinel) is toxic. It can cause very severe side effects and she could really be burning or irritated from it. I think it could also make her very itchy. Please make sure she isn't allergic. |
Baxter does the same thing only he runs through our floor length curtains for hours on end. I called my vet the first time we gave it to him and they said it was normal. |
Thanks for all the comments. I did have Lillie tested and she is not allergic to it, I think she is just being cranky about it and telling me that she does not want it on. |
I had my babies on Frontline and Rosie reacted in a similar way. Changed to Puppy Revolution and she doesn't have any reaction. |

I am in a similar position right now because our Toby has a terrible reaction to these products and because of this I have done some reading as to the dangers involved with using these on such small animals. Please correct me ( anyone) if I am wrong, but I read that these chemicals do not leave our babies bodies, but build up gradually over time and can become very toxic. We have been thinking that this year we will have to find something holistic as an alternative, but are a bit nervous because we are in a high tick area. Anyone use a holistic product and if so, what would it be? |

Doesn't the package even say not to let it touch you? I think usually when they do this it is a reaction. |

Ellie May quote: "Some of these drugs are very irritating to the skin. Doesn't the package even say not to let it touch you?" (Don't know how to do double quotes.) That is true, isn't it!!!! Why would it be okay for the flea med. to touch our furbabies' skin but not ours? |
I have always used frontline on my dogs and never thought about it. When I got lily at the beginning of fall I got some for her from the vet and when I put it on her she freaked and just sat in the middle of the room for like 10 minutes and then started rolling around all crazy so I put her in the sink and gave her a bath. I will not put this on her again but I also live in an area that is known for ticks and fleas so I have to find something to use. |

That's why it bothers them.:( |
My Mimi does this every single time I was concerned she was reacting to it and washed it off and tried the other RX flea meds and she did the same thing. I washed it off and tested her on my own.. A week later I took some neosporin and stuck some in the same area you would the flea med. She did the same exact thing but was fine by morning. She seems more pissed then anything |
