Heart murmur-what you do.. What would you do as a buyer or as a breeder. (I aslo posted this in the breeder section? I just picked up my puppy yesterday and took him to the vet today. He is 8 weeks old (I know ) and he was diagnosed with a stage 3 systolic murmur. I paid $900 for him AKC limited . As a side note, I was planning on also buying a female from her in 2 months. I have not talked to her yet, as I wanted to get some input from YT first. The breeder does have a 1 yr warranty for congenital defects. I am willing to wait a few months and see if he grows out of it or if it reduces in stage but because there is no guarantee, would it be appropriate to ask for a discount of say $400 on either this puppy or the pending female? I don't know what she would do with this puppy if I returned it for a replacement in the future~what would you do with it? Give it away or sell it at a low price based on it's health record? I want this to be a win-win for both me/my puppy and the breeder. Please respond ASAP so I can give my breeder a call soon. Thanks (I also posted this in the general discussion section~sorry for the duplicate posting but I thought that more posters would see this) __________________ |
My Hoku was diagnosed with a Grade 4-5 heart murmur when I got her. I had her checked by a 2nd vet and had an ultrasound done. When everyone concluded that this was not a slight murmur that she could outgrow I sent copies of everything to the breeder and she said she would take Hoku back and give me a replacement puppy. I was already attached to her and did not want her put down so I kept her with the understanding that when she passed on I would receive another puppy for free. Meanwhile, the breeder had another litter from different parents so she gave me one of those puppies also. |
Eva~Thanks for your response. I am so confused right now. If I choose to keep this puppy (which I most likely will end up doing) and still agree to purchase a female from her in 2 months, when her current litter will be ready, what would be an appropriate offer? Any thoughts from anybody? |
I would call the breeder and let him/her know. Most of the time they are real understanding. I also understand that you are attached to your little one. I would call the breeder and let them know and go from there. Hopefully this is something that your baby would grow out of. |
I think to make an informed decision this puppy needs to be evaluated by a cardiologist. A cardiologist will be the one that would perform an ultrasound. Some dogs have murmurs without any other symptoms and in some the murmur is the first symptom of what could be congential heart failure. Had your breeder kept this puppy longer their vet would've discovered the murmur instead of leaving you in a difficult situtation. Personally I would return the puppy for a refund. |
Thanks Thank you all for your input. I really do appreciate it. I have also received some valuable info from the breeder section and all of this has given me alot to think about. |
