Why & how often should a Blood Panel be done I'm wonder about blood panels & the benefits in doing them on a healthy spayed or neutered dog. *Can you offer some reasons to do them? *How often should one be done? *As a yorkie approaches a certain age should they be done? *What is included in a full blood panel? *What is the difference in a blood test & a full blood panel (and are there other types of blood tests?) *For a routine full blood panel does a dog have to fast beforehand? *How much should I expect to pay for a full blood panel? *What else should be known about a blood panel? |
i would like to know also! |
This is a great link to bookmark. It will show what your vet can tell from a simple blood chemistry panel: http://www.bichonfriseusa.com/caninebloodwork.htm CBC's are very inexpensive. Prices vary depending on where you live, but under $50. Most vets recommend getting one done annually until a dog reaches the senior years at age seven. After that, twice a year is recommended. It is a great tool to troubleshoot little problems before they become serious issues. In addition to CBC's, all Yorkies should have a bile acids test done preferably before they even come home, but at least before their spay or neuter. Since Yorkies are 36 times more likely to have a liver shunt than all other breeds combined, it's essential to have this test. Again, this is a very inexpensive test, between $40-$75. As they age, it's good to get a thyroid panel done, too. |
yes, a lot depends on where you live for all vet tests., and/or vet bills |
thank you - I'll go read the link. I adopted mine when they were over 2 - so they had already been fixed, I'm assuming somewhere along the line they had been tested. I know for sure Bubba came from a show breeder so I'm assuming he was tested before he was ever sold. My vet recommended doing a full blood panel the last time I was there and I wondered about the value in doing it, but didn't ask questions then  I know they generally do a little blood test - but they made this sound different, so I'm not clear on all the differences |

are you also saying a yorkie is considered a senior at age 7? That seems young. |

It's not just Yorkies, but all dogs are considered seniors by vets at age seven. Of course, little dogs like Yorkies usually live much longer than larger breeds. |
I'm still trying to understand what the difference is in a blood test & a full blood panel - in a given blood test can they pick & choose what they test for? |

This may explain the difference much better that I can! http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?articleid=989 |
they are 6 yrs old. |
cool good to know |
Many people only have blood panels run before a surgery or if the dog is sick. But it really is a good idea to have a full blood panel done once a year to make sure everything is normal. You may catch a problem early by doing this. I paid $100 for Lacy in October |
