Heartgard VS Interceptor I would like to ask for your opinion on a decision between heartgard and interceptor. Mitzi always got heartgard and did very well with it. When we got Maggie she was on interceptor but I'd like to have the same heartworm medication for both. Last wek Maggie had a very bad case of diarrhea and I think it was after she got her interceptor pill. What are your experiences? Thank you so much for your help!!!!!! :aimeeyork |
Interceptor is sometimes thought to cause less bad reactions in small dogs. I like it because it is an intestinal dewormer also without adding the extra ingredient like Heartgard Plus has to. Interceptor is always my first choice but there isn't a thing wrong with Heartgard if it works for your dog. |
tumi was on heartgurd since we got her and when we got gracie, they put her on interceptor. I asked the doc if i could put both on interceptor 2 months ago since it would make my life so much easier. She said yes. so tumi has been on interceptor for 2 months with no problems!:) |
sentinal my vet thinks sentinal is the best, kills all worms and deters fleas. Its more expensive though. |

Thank you all so much for your input! Mitzi and Maggie send tiny Yorkie kisses! |
Currently my babies are on Heartguard and are doing well on it plus Max is more willing to take it than his previous heartworm medicine. Before he was on Heartguard he was on Sentinel and it worked good, the only thing is that I live in Texas and we have a flea population most year round. So even though Sentinel helps as a flea preventive from them reproducing won't prevent them from getting on your dog (the flea has to bite to become sterilize) it didn't help much. So I was giving my dog Sentinel and flea medication and was spending alot as Sentinel is not cheap. And the little boogger would not swallow the pill it was a hassle everytime he needed to take it. Since we switched to heartguard he's been doing good on it and eats it as its a treat type of thing as before I had to disguise the pill in peanut butter and give it to him with a biscuit. If he found the pill he would spill it out. I know you didn't ask about Sentinel but Interceptor(which is made by the same company)is the same thing except Sentinel has that flea program but they use the same heartworm medicine. |
I used to give lulu interceptor and she did well on it. Used that one because our vet said that was the one that he never saw any adverse reaction in the yorkies he treats with it. |
Tobey was always on Heatgard and Advantage. When I took Isabella they gave me free sample Sentinel didn't have a problems. |
Tucker has been on Iverhart Max for a year now with no problems and Molly just started it this month and is doing well. I like that it gets intestinal worms including 1 variety that the others don't (forget which one at the moment). I'm always afraid they'll pick up some parasite when we're out playing or walking even though I try to keep a close eye on them. |
I have always given Lady Interceptor. She is epileptic and it's the one least likely to trigger seizures. I also prefer the dosing since it comes in a 10 lbs. and under dose. Since it's a pesticide, I believe "less is more". |
