What is quarantine? If they keep them for so long where do they stay, in cages? Do they feed them, etc. How does that work? Can you visit them? |

There is no longer a quarantine in Hawaii for dogs. My dad lives there, I've got friends who take their dogs there all the time. They DO have to have SPECIFIC tests and vaccinations done and all that by a certain time before you go though, so make sure you check what all is needed. I don't remember off the top of my head, but I did find the info on the internet. They CANNOT fly in cabin on the WAY TO Hawaii; they must go in cargo. They CAN fly in cabin on the way home though. I'm waiting for them to change THAT, b/c there's NO WAY Max is leaving my sight. I'll look around and see if I can find where I found the info on what all you need and when and post it here for you. I wish I were going over there! |

It is really expensive the first time you take them over there. After that, you just have to keep up with the paperwork and it's not so costly. A friend of mine flies 2 of his dogs over all the time for a couple of weeks at a time and he said the first time was horrendous as far as the cost went! Now he says it's not too bad. |
I'm from Hawaii and I can tell you the law is very strict regarding this matter. My family still lives there so I visit them twice a year. I've always wanted to bring my babies with me but when I called the airline they say there's so much work involved in bringing a dog to Hawaii that is not worth all the trouble and stress you and your dog have to go through. Unless you're planning to stay for a very long time, I don't advise it. I hope in the future they will make it much easier cause I know babies will love it there. Since I grew up there, I can think of a million and one places I want to take them. |
Even though the quarantine has been lifted, there are still a million hoops to jump through. Pet must fly cargo to the Island - MUST go to Honolulu where they are taken off the place and checked out by officials. You must pick them up in Honolulu by 5:00 or they stay the night at your cost of quite a bit. There is also paperwork that must be submitted to their health department no sonner than 10 days before you leave, but you must verify that it arrived and everything is okay or they can still hold your pet in quarantine. |
Wow, I can't imagine putting Ellie through any of that. She would be so scared. I think we'll stay in Michigan.:) |
Laurie, did you see that she would have to fly in cargo? |

However, just the fact that they have to go cargo on the way there (they can fly in cabin on the way back, b/c by then, they figure if the dog is safe to be IN Hawaii, he's certainly safe to ship out) is what's assuring that I won't be going to visit my dad again until they change that:( ...and I'm used to being in Hawaii every October til I got Max. It's no big deal to be in Honolulu to get them before 5 pm,unless there's some weird glitch in flights. Like I said before, I've got at least one friend who's got two small dogs (not Yorkies, I think they're Maltese) and he takes them over every couple of months and doesn't have a problem since the very first trip. Me, I'm staying stateside unless it's a dire emergency! |
yes but only from san fran to hawaii Quote:
