Puppy food?
 
I'm currently feeding my ten week old puppy Purina Pro Plan puppy food, per my breeder's suggestion, but I've heard that it's full of fillers and by-products so I'm considering switching to another brand.

I took him to the vet yesterday and they gave me a free bag of science diet, lol. I've heard such awful things about that brand, the fact that they gave me an entire free bag kind of confirmed it. I took it so as not to be rude but I won't be feeding him that.

So which puppy food is the best? I've been reading up on the artemis and canidae brands, but I'm finding limited information about puppy food.

Canidae All Life Stages is good. Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lover's Soul is okay. I'm sure Wellness has a puppy food out and I like that brand. Or maybe Natural Balance?

Canidae is All Life Stages - so you'd never really have to switch (although, no variety can cause acquired allergies). Artemis is good too - so are Orijen, Evangers, Wellness, Wysong, Natures Variety.

dogfoodanalysis.com is a good site with some good info, but you have to keep in mind that info is based on one person's opinion, not long term research. Please don't let it be your only source while you look for the non-existant perfect diet. (I did and it almost killed mine!:eek: )

It's a little less one-sided list MANY sites with research and reviews and explores raw and home cooking as well.
Also important to remember is that what is best for one dog or ranked highest on one site, my not be the best option for YOUR dog. Science Diet is by no means a good quality food, but it is what works best for some dogs.

There is a sticky at the top of this section that give ifno on how to get free samples. You just have to experiement with your options and see what is best for your little one. When you have found a keeper, you'll know from the results it yields.

Thanks so much for the advice, but what kind of signs should I be looking out for? With the purina he's on now, he's very active and energetic, he eats and expells regularly, he doesn't scoff at the food or anything, ect. Should I even switch?

I didnt know Science brand is no good! I got him some treats from that brand, is that okay?
And what about Eukanuba?
He has been eating it on a regular basis but last two days he has kind of been eating it less... I am wondering... is it normal that they lose appetite for a short while? And how short is short?

That's a matter of opinion and something that you have to decide for yourself. There is always something "better" as what is "better" is just a matter of opinion in itself...depending on what someone defines "better." Shouldn't the overall goal be to feed something that will result in a happy, healthy dog? YOU are the only one that can judge that and make that decision.:)
