Neutering and Teeh Pulling Questions Due to schedule conflictions we are having to get Brody neutered on Wednesday (he was scheduled for the 17th). He will be just under 5 months old. I just have a few questions concerning how old everyone else's Yorkie was when they were neutered. I'm also curious as to whether or not they were losing teeth at that age. Brody doesn't seem to have lost any teeth. I would have like to get some extracted, but I don't know if that would be an unwise decision. How soon do the adult teeth come in after extraction? Any suggestions would be welcomed. Thanks |
Ellie was six when she was spayed. I would not spay or neuter til about 6 months. At that time any remaining teeth can come out otherwise the dog has to be put under again. That is two anesthetic episodes and two blood panels. I would wait til 6 months to spay and 6 months or more to neuter. |
Oops, messed up the thread title. |

Although, perhaps I should wait until the other date, which is closer to the end of the month. I just don't want him to start marking the house and getting other bad habits. Most larger puppies are neutered around 4 months. |
Consult your vet as to when your dog is ready to be neutered. His testicles should have dropped to do this otherwise I believe the surgery is more complicated. I have two vets I take my boy to and both told me to wait until 6 months old. I probably would have preferred to do it before he started to lift his leg, but I decided to go with what the vet said was best. I also had a pre-op blood test. He had 5 baby teeth extracted at the same time. I don't think the teeth extractions bothered him much because he was ready to chew on something 24 hours later. |

I understand why you wouldn't want to wait but I think most Yorkies are neutered at the time of teeth extraction. They lose teeth at about 5 or 6 months. They can safely be neutered at about 4 months as long as they are 2 pounds. |
The last few replies have been great, thanks so much! He is about 3.25lb and both testicles have dropped. They have been that way for about a month. The vet believes he is fine to be neutered, it's just my decision. I'll consult my Vet tomorrow on the extractions. I'm more worried about doing the extractions in one fell swoop to minimize the amount of times he has to go under anesthesia. I don't think he's lost a tooth at just under 5 months yet  |
Rescheduled for the 26th. He will be 5 1/2 months old at that point and we will extract what isn't lost :(. I think it'll be better to only put him under once. |
