Treats Anyone?? I have two puppies now and its been a while since I had puppies so now that im potty training them, I would like to know what your opinions are on treats and chewy bones. My puppies have chewy bones around all the time, is that okay? What treats does everyone give there furry babies? I heard that greenies and milk bone are good... but i would really like some more opinions since i am not a fan of all the commercial stuff!!! Thanks in advance for all the helpful advice!!:aimeeyork |
Ouch... Greenies and Milk Bones are bad, very bad... Basically everything at Petsmart except maybe the Old Mother Hubbard are bad. Stay away from corn and by-products. We like Buddy Biscuits, Charlee Bears, Sams Yams, Zukes, Bully Sticks... Also there is nothing wrong with giving Cherrios or small bits of cheese! |
I would definetely stay away from greenies and milk bones too. Archie loves to chew on those mini hide bones and for training treats I use Zukes and Yorkie Yummies (you can buy them from chattiesmom on this board), they are both great since they are healthy and small enough for puppies. |
My breeder suggested that we not give any commercial treats until the pup reached 6 months of age. We did give cut up peeled baby carrot as a reward for come, sit, down. Remi, who is 1 1/2 years old now, still loves baby carrot and broccoli, as his favorite treats. His favorite crunchy is liver biscotti. We also use natural/wellness small treats for training class. We never use rawhides or greenies. |
What about little pieces of cheese, green beans, carrots, apples, pears, etc? That way, you know it's good for them and you dont have to worry about preservatives and by-products! |

Everyone- I wasnt sure if veggies and fruits where alright for them to eat... I do give them carrots, broccoli and cauliflower sometimes- and the older puppy loves bananas, oranges, and grapefruit... is it alright for them to eat those kind of fruits? |
How could I forget Liver Biscotti? Those are our favorites! Bananas are OK (mine get a slice every morning) but I'd skip the citrus (oranges, etc.) Apples are good. With mine carrots just tend to come out the other end. They LOVE green beans though. Peas and carrots are in their Merrick food so I'm sure that's OK. Potatoes too. I sell all the commercial treats I listed on my website www.barkaholics.biz or find your nearest independent pet boutique (not petsmart/petco) :D |
Some good treats are green beans (cooked or canned without salt), carrot (peeled, given raw or cooked), bell peppers, banana, apple (peeled), watermelon, boiled white meat chicken (no skin, fat or seasonings), boiled egg, Cheerios, cottage cheese, plain yogurt and strawberries. Treats and bones that I won't give are Greenies, rawhides, Nylabones, pig ears, chocolate, onion, garlic, grapes, raisins, macademian nuts, fatty or salty meat and artificial sweeteners. |
