8month old not gaining weight..should I worried?
 

Mia is 8 months old and weighs 2.5 lbs. She has basically been the same size for months now. I know alot of yorkies are this small and smaller, but her parents are 4 and 5 lbs. Her sister from the same liter weighs 4 lbs already. She is very active and seems healthy for the most part, but she does seem a little to thin to me. When she is wet I can see her spine sticking up a little and you can feel her ribs just a little too. Maybe I am just use to my other 2 yorkies who are fat little piggys.
She eats Canidae dry food and tolerates it very well. But, if she gets one little bite of any human food she will be throwing it up about an hour or two later.
So needless to say, we have cut out all human food. She seems to have trouble tolerating treats as well, even the greenies make her sick. Has anyone else had these types of problems before?
Her low weight gain and sensitive stomach have got me to worrying about liver shunt. Maybe I am just being to paranoid.
Any and all advice would be appreciated.

Hello I really dont have any advice But I just wanted to say she sure is cute. My female seems a little thin to me too. My male was thin too then once he got to the one year mark he started putting on a lot more weight.hes kind of chubby now.

From what I have heard they slow down in growth at 6 months so she is probably done growing. I have a girl that is close to 4 lbs and she just doesn't eat as much as my 6lber. I am sure she is fine just small.

Have you talked with your vet about your concerns? Maddie was underweight with a very sensitive tummy too, but she's much bigger than Mia to start with. Maddie started gaining weight when the vet put her on Hills Prescription diet I/D. I was glad when she gained some weight because she was so boney and I could really notice it when I bathed her. Mia is so tiny...and darling too! I used to worry about liver shunt too, so I know how you are feeling. We can't help but worry about our precious babies!

I would not worry about it . Gioia was 3 pounds at 8 months and now she is 3 pounds . As my vet told me , if I want her to take more weight , she'll be obese.

I'm sure she's just fine. My baby is only 2.8 lbs. and he's a year and 3 months. You can feel his bones as well, but my vet says he's healthy. Just gonna be a tiny guy. he is a good eatter and very active. Have you had her checked out by a vet? She's just going to be a tiny princess.

Well, the first question I have to ask is DOES SHE APPEAR TO be too thin? There's a weight chart vets use, some do it from a 1-10 scale and others a 1-5. I'll explain this based on the 1-5. Ideally, your dog should be somewhere around a 3. You should be able to see the faint outline of her ribs and be able to feel them without having to press with any force on her sides with a finger, but if you can feel the space between her ribs or see her vertibrae protruding across her back, she is too thin,

Another thing, has your vet checked for worms? It is not uncommon for puppies to get worms. If she is wormy, the worms will be eating everything she is eating and she will not be able to gain weight.

Similarly, have you checked her teeth? Some puppies -esp. toy dog puppies, do not loose thier puppy teeth and need to have them pulled. The baby teeth begin to stick out and pinch the lips and gums and may even begin to decay in the mouth causing mouth pain and reluctance to eat.

A vet check would help rule out these two possible causes. If you rule out these issues and your dog looks like she is good weight, I wouldn't worry about it. She may simply be done growing. Incidently, even if her parents are larger, if she is closly line bred she may simply grow up small thier her parents.

If you are concerned about your baby having a liver shunt, you should get her tested for it....The test is called an acid bile test, and it's not very expensive, only about $55-$65 and it will ease your mind. Trust me. Yorkipower gave a lot of great ways to check whether or not your baby's too thin. It's probably nothing with your baby, but it's good to get checked out anyway. Good luck with your baby...Hopefully, she's just a very small yorkie. A few of the people on this forum have the smaller yorkies that end up being 2-3lbs.
