arg.. i need home cooking help
 

Ok... so i'm stearing clear of Chicken and beef since we are trying to figure out Layla's allergies.. but WHAT OTHER MEATS ARE THERE? lol.. right now she is having lamb.... she is not crazy abotu fish (although will eat it at the babysitters... go figure) so please... suggestions are great... i dont' care how expensive the meat is.. i just can't think of what else to use!!!!!!

Have you tried Turkey?

You could buy canned rabbit, lamb - is it Wysong that makes all of those canned meats? Buffalo, venison would be good options, but tougher to find. Scrambled eggs? Whatdidja decide about the nutritionist - are you gonna go for it? She would have food ideas too. :)

rabbit is good.... NO idea where to venision.. short of killing a dear

i think i'm going to hold off on the nutritionist only until i try all these options first :)

You know, that is a big circle and I think the "no turkey for dogs" has been blown waaaay out of proportion. No skin and no fat... I would give white meat. Organ meat might be acceptable but I'm not sure. Beside the pancreatitis concern (which isn't a concern if you're using white meat) there is a concern that the preservative could hurt them. I guess it could but then any meat could. Ellie's nutritionist says turkey is fine.

Wysong makes this 95% Au Jus stuff - which is really just the meat itself - so check this out. If you look around on the site, you'll also see rabbit by Wysong and the other exotics too, so there might be some options for Layla.

if they are possible allergens i'm trying to stay clear... i'm trying to think of rare meats but boy those are hard to find

I know how it is...:rolleyes: Always trying to figure out what they're allergic to. If you don't use lamb, duck or fish, you would have to buy it cooked (as Ann said) and to me that defeats the purpose of homecooking since the meat is processed and canned.

If she has never had turkey or egg in any dog food before, it might be fine.

ya.. i'm really lucky we have a great butcher here so i SHOULD be able to get the lamb and duck.. i know i can get lamb in the grocery store... thanks guys!

We too have always home cooked for our babies even as a kid. I was told by our Vet recently that Turkey is not the best for Yorkies and ironically neither of my yorkies like turkey or lamb. I'm assuming that Duck would also be too fatty for them but I don't know. I cook organic chickens, pork chops, Dakota Organic ground beef (found at Costco and is YUM!), ground pork, certain fish if they are in the mood, and once a month I cook the chicken livers in a saucepan of water, which every one of my dogs LOVES mixed in with their dinner including the juice. (My Mom swears by this). In the summer we grill the meats and the rest of the year I will bake or boil. I also add tons of veggies from the garden or frozen with a little brown rice mixed in and eggs once in a while. This is usually their dinner than I give them organic kibble for breakfast and midnight snacks. It seems to work great for us. Please understand that I'm not an expert on this, just trying to keep my babies as healthy as I can. Good Luck with finding the allergy, I'm sure it's not an easy task. What made you think it was an allergy? I'm just curious about the symptoms? My little girl licks her feet like crazy sometimes:eek: .

We add a little ground turkey, all white meat and no skin with their dry food. Our Vet said that was fine. They love it and haven't had any problems. What is supposed to be wrong with turkey?

How about ground buffalo or ostrich? I can get both in my big chain grocery stores. I think rabbit might be a good alternative too, if you can get it. Ground turkey is probably ok, but introduce it slowly if she hasn't had any yet. I feed my two tilapia, perch, salmon, and canned tuna from time to time too.

Remember, you can always sub cottage cheese + eggs, as well as legumes or soy products for meat in some of the recipes. This should help give a little more variety, provided these things don't irritate her tummy.

To get your hands on venison, ask friends/family if they know anyone who hunts, or hunted and has the meat in a freezer. A guy I work with bow-hunts, and offered me some of his deer meat (for a small processing price). I ended up not getting it, because I didn't get back to him in time, but I think it would have been great for them! Oh well, next season :)
