Feeding raw and traveling... Question for raw feeders - I travel extensively with Lucy both domestic and oversees. How can I fit raw into our lifestyle? I noticed many of you give the medallions which seems easy enough with good results but I'm not sure how to feed raw on the road? Thanks in advance :) |
So far I've never had a problem traveling with raw. I haven't gone on any big trips...just road trips. I always take an ice chest to keep the medallions cold. And having a refrigerator if in a hotel room helps too. When I go to Kansas City this summer, we won't have a refrigerator in the room and it's a very long drive so I'll be buying Nature's Variety freeze-dried raw medallions. That's what I would suggest - the freeze-dried raw when you travel. |
We travelled with our girls a lot too. And NV makes the freeze dried version and that is what we use. I just break it into little pieces. |
Yep, freeze dried; or, you could ship Raw Frozen ahead of time to your hotel perhaps? |
Perfect! I was hoping I could get something freeze-dried for travel. I think I'm going to go with the Medallions here at home also. Which brand do you use/recommend? Also, is there a book I should get? I'm thinking to keep it simple with using the medallions but would appreciate some advice. Thanks! |

I don't have any books but some that were recommended to me were 'Switching To Raw' by Sue Johnson and 'Natural Nutrition For Cats and Dogs' by Kymathy R Shultze. Also, 'Works Wonders' by Tom Lonsdale. You'll probably find some controversy surrounding all of these books, as w/ everything raw (the "world is flat" kind of issue). Amazon would probably have good consumer reviews. Did Lucy start raw then or are you just gearing up? :D |
Not yet. I would love to start switching her over the weekend. I know that my local feed store carries all the raw varieties. It's just a little intimidating to know nothing about it, how much to feed, etc. Any advice would be much appreciated. |

Just enter Lucy's info. and you'll know how many medallions per day. :) I really like NV's lamb, venison, rabbit. Anecdotally, it seems that the lamb and venison is easiest for them to start on. I've seen some on here who've had a couple digestive issues from starting right off on beef or chicken (being a bit rich, perhaps?). My babies had no issues whatsoever - I started them on venison, then lamb (and Marcel has a history of terrible digestive issues - but did great w/ raw transition). If you need any help, just ask! :D |
I switched Jambo to raw at 4 months old. I have tried to get him to eat a variety of meats but he just won't touch the meats other than chicken and only the pre-frozen (Primal, Stella & Chewys, Nature's Variety) at that. He will eat lamb but only the ones I get from the natural pet store from Harmony Farms. I have tried giving him beef, venison, turkey, etc. and he does not go for it. Unlike some dogs, it wasn't a smoothe transition to raw. I did not have any problems digestion wise but it took him a while to warm up to it. He really liked biting into dry kibble. I think we are in the same vicinity so let me know if you have questions about where to get this stuff. |
Thank you! |
[B]We too just switched to Raw and I am so happy that we did. Good luck to you, I owe all the help I got to Wylie's Mom and MyFairLacy!!!  [B] |
