Is 13 weeks okay to do Bile Acid Test? Hi everyone, I'm brand new here and haven't gotten my new baby yet. My breeder has agreed to do a BAT but the Vet is fully booked. My baby will be just over 13 weeks when she is done. I've read that 9-12 weeks is ideal but is 13 okay? Any advice will be appreciated! :) |
Nine weeks is okay but I personally wouldn't waste the money. Sixteen weeks is better. Six months and up is best. |
test Bile acid under 6 months is not always that accurate. If one is done at 12 weeks or so, it should be repeated at 6 to 12..if you are planning onbreeding. If there are no symptons, I would S/N and not worry. One thing I did nto know is...the dog is not only fasted, but should not even smell food of other dogs in the house..it can raise the numbers in expectation of eating. Like Pavlov's dogs salivating when they heard a bill ring. |

Yes, that can affect the pre-prandial (pre-meal) number, but the post-prandial (post-meal) number is the one that will indicate if the bile is clearing. If the bile is not clearing after meals, then it indicates a problem. Yes, it is safe to bile acid test a 13 week old pup. 16 weeks is preferred, but 13 weeks is fine. In case your vet is not up to date on bile acid testing, it is no longer necessary to do a 12 hour fast as recommended previously. They just need to take paired samples. One before the meal and one two hours after the meal. This is recommended by Dr. Center from Cornell who is one of the leading experts in liver shunt and actually invented the bile acid test. |
I had Diggys done at 10 weeks....he was having seizures so I could not wait! Wanted answers right away....and I got them! 5 pre 7 post :) |
