Help! She swallowed her bully stick My puppy was chewing on her bully stick, and swallowed it. I guess it wasn't as big as I thought it was. Should I be concerned? She is acting fine. I have looked everywhere for the piece, and that is the only thing I can figure is that she swallowed it. Maybe it was an inch and a half, maybe smaller. Oh, I don't know............what should I do? Lori |
I don't know. I would call the vet and until you hear from them, don't induce vomiting. That could hurt the throat. They will probably tell you to just watch... |
How long before I can breathe easy---that the stick will 'pass'? |
Is she okay? I hope so. I had a scare with my little one with a dental chew that was soft. I didn't realize she would be able to eat it so fast. She had trouble with a BM. She was scared and kept trying and then running close to me as if she wanted help. I watched her carefully, then decided to put her in a warm bath. It did the trick. It was scary to me and it happened late at night when I had no one to call. Keep a close eye on your baby and hope you have good news to tell us. |
Maybe she chewed it up smaller and ate it?? I dont know....sorry.. |
Hopefully she chewed it more than you thought and it won't be a problem. If it was that large when she swallowed it, an inch and a half is pretty big for her to pass and it can cause some damage. Worse it can cause a blockage. Call your vet. Some signs to watch for are loss of appetite, vomiting, lethargy, painful abdomin, diarrhea and straining to poop. |
Reading my post again, I hope I didn't scare you. I just wanted to make sure you knew those things are a possibility so speak with your vet. Most likely, she will pass it without any trouble. :) |
Just now seeing this, Hope your babie is ok, It should pass on its own, But maybe you should call the vet to be sure..please keep us updated. |
Just seeing this...hope your baby is ok. |
awwww hoping for an update...ill check back later ;) |
I would call the vet first. I would not just wait it out. Problems could develop later on tonight and you won't be able to contact the vet. Better safe than sorry. Hope everything turns out fine. |
Archie always has great advice, so I would follow that!!  |
So far she has acted fine. She has eaten well today, been playful, and has pooped. (I examined it, and didn't see anything). Maybe it wouldn't come out so soon. I have searched for it thinking maybe she didn't swallow it, but haven't found it. I am going to continue to watch her and hopefully nothing troublesome will arise. This is about as bad as having a toddler! I thought my time of watching "little ones" was over! Thanks for all the good thoughts. I will keep you all posted! Lori |

Your absolutely correct. Yes it is very much the same as watching babies. It took Buddy three days before he vomited up a leg of a stuffed spider he got for Christmas last year. I never new he chewed the leg off. I threw the spider in the garbage when everyone left in the evening because he was guarding it and I won't allow that. I never missed the leg when I threw it away. Three nights later he woke me up in the middle of the night throwing up violently. I paniced when I saw this slimmy black thing about three inches long come out. I swear I thought it was some kind of slug. I tried to get myself to touch it and picked it up with a kleenex. It took me a couple of minutes before I realized what it was. I was shocked! Thank God he got it up because that could have caused real problems. I hope your little one will be ok. Just wanted to let you know it might be a couple of days IF she did swollow a large piece. I hope she gets it up if she did. |
Do you think she will throw it up, or will she be able to digest it--and poop it out? |
Also, what do you mean "guarding" the toy? Not letting you take it? Is that bad? Thanks......Lori |

Yes, it can be if not corrected. This is something I have been working on with Buddy for a very long time and he finally has given up and now shares his special toys with me. Never allow your dog to growl at you because it won't let you touch something it has. This can become a big problem if not corrected. I do hope your little one will be fine. |
Are bully sticks the same as beef tendon? If they are the same, I'm pretty sure that beef tendon is very easy to digest so it's probably ok. I'm no expert on this, but I can tell you that my Lulu gets a beef tendon every day and she always swallows about an inch to an inch and a half. If they were hard to digest, her stomach would be so full of them! She has never had any problems but I am often concerned that she could choke. I am trying to find a replacement treat that I don't have to worry about her choking and that lasts as long as the beef tendon. Any ideas? |
I hope your baby is okay. This is why we don't do bully sticks very often. You have to watch so carefully to catch it when it gets that small (often sooner than you think). Then they are so possessive with it that sometimes it's hard to take away. I also don't allow that. But they sometimes need to be reminded that I own everything! ;) |

The beef tendons are easy to digest when they are chewed into small pieces. I know you said she has never had any problems but it doesn't mean she won't at some time. These are tough treats meant to last. Anything hard and tough like that can cause a problem if swallowed in a chunk. They don't break down the same as when chewed. I don't mean to harp on about it, I just don't want anything to happen to your Lulu. :) Lori, I am so glad she is doing fine. You are right, they are just like toddlers sometimes. You never know what they are going to get into and can really make us worry. Thanks for the update. |
Wow! Just ran across this one. I hope your little one is ok. Is it possible that she hid or lost the piece of bully stick and didn't swallow it after all? I certainly hope so. Please keep us updated, because we worry! |
Just saw the thread. I hope she'll be fine. Keep us posted, please |
Well, two days have gone by and no troubles. I hope that means all is okay. She is acting fine, eating, pooping, playing. I am still trying to figure out exactly what is best for her to chew on. She does love to chew. Lori |
