So Nervous!!! I am SO NERVOUS!! Molly is in for her spay right now and what keeps coming back to haunt me is that the vet I took her to when I first got her at 16 weeks for her final series of shots thought that Molly was only 10 weeks old based on her teeth and her tinyness. The breeder and the breeders vet assured me that Molly is indeed the age they told me, just a tiny like her dad and siblings. What if that vet was right and Molly is only 4 months old now and not almost 6 months old? She weighs 2.5 lbs and we are having the pre-op blood work done. If by chance she is only 4 mos. old, can she be spayed safely? I just have to believe she is older. When we got her at 16 weeks, she was already staying dry through the night, that wouldn't be likely at 10 weeks would it? Her hair on her head had like 3/4-1" of silver roots already. I'm nervous - anyone want to give me a pep talk and tell me everything will be alright? P.S. Everyone at this vet just loves her and said she'll likely not get set down because everyone will want to snuggle with her. The receptionist was holding her when I left and the anesthesiologist called with a few more questions and said Molly was snuggled under her sweater. She also said she would call me when Molly was out of surgery. Thanks everyone!! |
Aww, does she get to come home today? A dog can safely be spayed at four months. Actually, although I would not recommend it, a dog can be spayed at 12 weeks as long as they are 2 pounds. |
Sending my best wishes to you and Molly for a safe uneventful procedure :) |
Ugh! Well, Molly is back home with me. They did not want to spay her until April or May because she is so tiny and her teeth are still erupting. They wouldn't even give her a rabies vaccine. So here my baby is either 4mos or almost 6 mos. and I can't even get a rabies vaccine. I'm going to contact her original vet again and get her original records (I just have the little baby book with vaccines/dates and the receipts). Would you experts wait until she is possibly 7-8mos. old or would you find another vet? She is so happy to be home, lol!! |
What a wonderful vet!!!!!:) Refusing to vaccinate until they are sure she is old enough is sooooo nice of them. She could go into heat before then and she could be spayed after about 4 months since she is over 2 pounds. I don't know why they didn't, but they aren't comfortable and that is excellent that they didn't do it when they don't feel it is safe!!! Maybe they hope she will get a bit bigger. |
I waited until Marcel was 10 mths old to neuter! He was only 2.5 pounds at the time, so I was scared. Then, the vet canceled bc a couple blood tests were off just a bit, so we waited 2 weeks - and did it then (follow up tests came back fine). It's fine to wait, esp. if it means waiting for teeth as well. :) |
I just want to know how old she really is. I don't want to think that the breeder lied to me - just don't have that gut feeling about them. They even called recently to see how things were going and asked if they could stay in touch because they like to know how their babies are doing (told me they would do so when we bought her). My horse's vet is friends/acquaintances with them and vouched for them and I trust her. I guess all in all it doesn't really matter when her birthday is, but I just like knowing. How else can you judge age besides teeth? |

I spoke with the breeder's vet again and she assured me Molly is indeed nearly 6 months old. She is going to send me Molly's records. She said she docked Molly's tail when she was 3 days old and saw her again at 6-7 weeks and every 2-3 weeks after that for her vaccines. What is the average age that yorkies go into heat? Does size play into this? |
Sounds like you have a great careful vet. I believe I have read that it is best to spay them before their first heat as this will result is preventative benefits for certain cancers and etc. I am sure others here can tell you much better. |
