Could someone calm my nerves? So my Samuel is going to the vet on Thursday to get dental work done. I hate it when my boys get anesthesia for anything. I know it is a simple teeth cleaning and one extraction and he needs it but I get so nervous. My vet has done a teeth cleaning and extractions on him before and it went fine but I just get so scared :( Any words of encouragement? |
aww.w.. i completley understand... it's hard to see our babies go through stuff like that.... but you know he will be ok :) Layla had it done and was just fine.. litle groggy.. but fine :) |
Take a deep breath..Everything will be A-OK!!! |
Aww I know how you feel! I'm a worrier, too. It will be okay :) |
Chewy goe in on wed to get his teeth cleaned... :( |
Do dogs always get anesthetized for dental checkups? Do vets always put babies to sleep just to check and clean their teeth? How often should their teeth be cleaned? WHich is riskier, using anesthesia regularly or risking bad teeth? |

It is recommended that they are cleaned 1 or 2 times yearly. If the teeth are kept very clean it doesn't need to be done nearly this often. Allowing tartar to build on the teeth can weaken the heart and kidneys over time then there would be organ problems to deal with. Cleaning the teeth is definately the way to go if there is build-up. |

My TommiGirl had it done once and it has been more than a year and her teeth are still sparkling clean. (Good enough to eat off of, as a matter of fact and mirth). I would not subject her to it more than once every 4-5 years if needed. My cousin's Yorkie had it done when she was 4 and she is going to be six and does not need it again. Use that stuff that you put in the drinking water. It works. But do not worry, your baby will be fine. So try to be calm. |
Awww, I'm sure everything will be just fine! :) I can't say I blame you for being nervous though, because I know I would be too :( I will say a little prayer for your sweet baby! :hands: |
I have to agree.....anesthesia induced dental cleanings 1 or 2 times a year is excessive. Scooter has them about every 2+ years. Maya is 3 and has yet to have one. Our vet is really good about checking their teeth and letting us know when they need a cleaning. I really think it helps to brush their teeth on a regular basis. Scooter is a little groggy when I go to pick him up. I just hold him and give him extra lovin' (I think he milks it a little!) and he's fine the next day. Don't worry....everything will be O.K. |
Oh, I forgot to say......I think it's really important to get their teeth cleaned when needed because poor oral health can lead to other health problems. |

They say dogs with good teeth should get them cleaned once or twice yearly and dogs with diseased gums should get them cleaned twice yearly. Ellie has periondontal disease and had her teeth cleaned late January 2007. Then she was spayed in late October and had them cleaned because she was already under. There was only a small amount of build-up. Ellie will only get it done when it is necessary, not on a schedule.:) |
