Yorkie Pancreatitis - PLEASE PAY ATTENTION! This is been my month so far......On July 2nd we woke and our 6 1/2 year old Precious, 4.8 lbs, had thrown up her dog food in our bed. (All sleep with us)..All cleaned up and then she seemed fine all day Sat and Sun. The morning of the 4th, I woke to diarrea on my pillow and she was still laying there. ...All cleaned up again and she acted ok but like she just had upset tummy or didn't feel really perky. That was about 8 am and approx 3 pm we left to go for a ride and have dinner. When we arrived home about 7 she was GONE! No explanation from our vet, said we could get an autopsy but often they did not show the real cause of death for sure. We didn't want that anyway as the pain was already unbearable for my husband and I. We had her cremated and she sits in my office in her little urn. On the evening at 2 in the am of the 10th, our other yorkie, vomited. I was still up and saw this. Watched her til about 3 and she kinda spit up again. By 8 that morning my husband had her at the hospital. She was diagnosed with pancreatitis. She was touch and go and in ICU for two days. Thank God Sassi is home and much better but our sweet baby girl Precious is gone forever, til we meet at the bridge! This disease runs in yorkies. As a matter of fact they are the #2 most suceptible. (sp?) PLEASE do not feed your babies table scraps or anything with fat! I beg you to pay attention if your yorkie starts vomiting and get her to a Dr IMMEDIATELY! Don't want others to go thru what we have been through the last 13 days and certainly do not want any babies to suffer cause you may not know this! |
I am so Sorry to hear you loss your baby and my heart goes out to you and your family! My prayers are with you on the recovery of your other baby. I do not feed Tilly or sami table scraps! just because it is what it is people food! and I dont feed them cat food! dog food is all they get to eat. they get their treats but that is about it! Again my prayers are with you and your family. |
I'm so sorry to hear about your baby thats just awful :( We've been having a little trouble w/our Spanky and while we were at the vet this last time he brought up the subject of his diet and made me aware of how much harm I was doing by feeding him bologna or hot dogs.I got lucky I wish the somehow you could have been told,if he had'nt told me I would'nt have known. So now Spanky's diet has changed. My heart goes out to you & your family I know how much these babies become apart of the family. :tinyheart |
Never heard of this, but I am certainly going to look into it now. Thank you very much for bringing it to my attention! I am so sorry for your loss and glad one of your angels made it through! |
Hello, Our 2 1/2 yr old male has been doing the same thing, 2 weeks ago he was going through a period of throwing up, then he was back to normal, and yesterday he started it again. He is on perscription food, but he may of gotten into something else, rawhidw possibly. Plan to take him back in tomorrow (Monday). Sorry about your tragedy. Ross |
I am so sorry for your loss. I know that no words are enough. You and your family are in my prayers. harley's mom |
I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I also have two babies cremated. One from kidney failure and the other from a massive stroke. It may be selfish on my part, but I feel like they are still here in the house with me. Thank you so much for the advice. |
I have gone thru the same thing with my Gizmo, but it was caught in time. I had no idea I was hurting him by feeding him people food. He was so spoiled to it that it took a while for him to accept just dog food. These little dogs dehydrate very quickly, we almost lost him. The hair raises on the back of my neck when people think it is cute that their dog will eat anything they do. The education of this matter almost cost me the apple of my eye. :aimeeyork |
I am so sorry about your loss. I hope that your remaining dog or dogs remain healthy. Thank you though for bringing that out so it doesn't happen to anyone else's dogs. Thank you and you are in my thoughts. |
I'm Sorry I am so sorry~ Your a very kind person to come and post to this forum about your loss...and worry for other Yorkies- Your character shows...and we here certainly can learn from this... Thank you...and hugs to you. |
I AM SO SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS....PRAYERS ARE WITH YOU. JOY, NIKKI :animal-sm AND CHLOE ROSE :rose: |
Pancreatitis Just wanted all Yorkie owners to be aware that Yorkies can get Pancreatitis without ever having had "people" food. My youngest Livvie was diagnosed soon after having her boarded at our vet's clinic! She came home and was sick soon after. I was only feeding her Science Diet puppy food. Never any snacks except for the yogurt puppy drops. She has since been switched to perscriotion ID Science Diet and has done much better. She still has flare ups, but I immediately quit feeding her food and give her limited water so that she does not get dehydrated. She has done pretty well since. Except for that she is a happy healthy 11 month old! |
I am so sorry for the loss of your girl. Hope all your others remain healthy and safe. This has been a wake up call to me. I thought it did not matter if I would give people food every once in a while to Genie, I guess I was wrong. |
This is why I wrote this post last night! WE DID NOT KNOW how dangerous their diet could be. We feel like we absolutely spoiled and loved our Precious to her death as we gave her most anything, other than bones, chocolate and pork! Those are the ONLY three items we knew not to let them have! I am sure there are many good foods but after DAYS of reasearch and calls etc we have all our kids on Nutro Senior, including our cat! We had them on Eukanuba, but too much fat and by-products! FYI-- We also found out that a baby is considered Senior after 5. Take good care of your sweet Spanky, he is a DOLL! God Bless |
Iresearch2, you are so right and I found out that they don't know the exact cause of pancreatitis in our precious children BUT just wanted all to know that "people" food and fats make it much worse! We did not know!!! If anyone can tell me about good treats for kids please do. We were doing the Walmart thing and tried Nutro and Mother Hubbard and they are all highly p - - - - -!!! It is soooooo sad that they want good treats and now hate what I am trying to give them including our Himalayan Mr Beaux! Please help on the good tasting, healthy treats as we do not know that either! |
