Canine Diabeties I posted a thread last week on the midwest section. I was telling how I had taken Kahlie to the vet for a routine check up and I asked him to check her urine. I noticed that she was going to the bathroom a lot and drinking more than usual. He did a urine test which shows signs of suger and then he did the blood work. I was 450!! I started her on her shots the next day and we did okay the first. I took Kahlie back to the vet one week later and her readings were 147. Still high I know but we are the way down. She is taking 7 units every 12 hours and we are hanging in there. She is sitting on the arm of my couch as I type so I know she is happy for all of those that said a little prayer for you. You should see her now, her spunk in back in her step and she even looks youger!! Today she actually jumped up on my bed and has not done that is ages. Thanks to all Love, :aimeeyork Kahlie's mom |
I am glad Kahlie has gotten some care for her diabetes and is getting better. |
Im so happy that Kahlie is being treated for her diabetes and she is doing much better. Thank you for the update. Please keep us posted. Gucci sent Kahlie puppy kisses. :) |
Glad to hear she is doing better.... How old is Kahlie? |
Will Kahlie have to take the shots from now on, or will a change of diet be okay? |
rest of her life!! :thumbdown Yes Kahlie will have to take the shots for the rest of her life. I hate that part she will have to take them for the rest of her life unless there is a miracle from God. It really hasn't been that bad I just think that what will happen if we had to leave town. Getting someone to watch her that will give her her shots may be something else. I have a great friend who gave me Kahlie when she was 8 weeks old. Her Shelby that passed away in November was my Kahlie's mother. She will give them to her and keep Kahlie I'm sure. It really hasn't been that bad the cost is around 20.00 for the needles and 29.00 for the insulin. Her dog food that the vet put her on is 17.00 and this all should last a little over two months. I have to say though that she was sicker than I realized. If you notice anything different with your baby get them checked. She acts totally different now, she is back looking for the bunnies in the back yard and running after the squerrals. She acts like nothing is wrong. So we will take it day by day. Thanks for your concerns. :) |
Wow. My aunt's Miniature Schnauzer just got diagnoses with diabetes. I found out the other day. He had the exact same symptoms you are describing, excess drinking and peeing. He will have to take shots for the rest of his life, too. He's 10, I think. How does this happen? Are there any preventative measures we can take? |
I don't know really if there is something that we could have done different. I asked the vet that and he said that she could have gotton it from a grandparent. I guess that it is like humans we can get things that our grandparents had/have. I do know that Kahlie use to get into the cat food a lot. I had to end up putting it up and out of reach for her. She didn't eat it while we were home she ate it if we left her alone. So yes I do blame myself and think I should have done this or that or bought the best food for her. I do that that I felt better when the vet asked me if I had children and I said yes, and he said didn't you do the best for them that you could? That is all we can do it the best that we can. I will try to make her as happy as I can be. |
I am so sorry for little Kahlie...but please don;t blame yourself, you're a good mama, other people could just not "deal with it" and that is what makes you differente, you are doing the most and best you can!! My boss had a little stray cat that got diagnosed with diabetes when he was around 10, this same cat lived to be over 20 yrs old and had a great quality of life, his insulin was the same her husband took... i will be praying for you and Kahlie...but please do not feel responsible! |

Just like in humans, there are dogs who carry the genetic markers for diabetes. However, proper diet, nutriotion and above all else, WEIGHT can ward off he onset of insulin dependance. Most Yorkies who become diabetic do so when approaching thier senior years, and a good percentage of them are overweight. |
I'm so glad to hear that your baby is feeling better. I know it's probably hard to give her shots all the time and have her on special food, but the most important thing is that she's living a healthier life now and that she's happy!!! My Miko has a liver shunt that can't be repaired (we're still looking for another specialist that could take a look at him) and we have to give him 2 kinds of medicine everyday, and he has to eat special hepatic food for his liver. He's only 1 yr old!!! The vet said that he should live a normal life with medication and his special diet though because of what he saw during the surgery. Ever since we got him on those things he has been 100% back to himself, hyper and happy as can be! :) Your baby is going to be just fine. :) |
