Baaaaad build up of tartar?? I just adopted a yorkie (Turtle) two weeks ago. I noticed that his breath smells REALLY bad. He does NOT like having his teeth brushed or messed with. I miraculously got to take a good look at his teeth the other day and there is this yellow, hard bony like layer over the top half of his teeth. I think it is mostly on the top, but it's kind of hard to tell because he will not let you look at them. His teeth appear to be in pretty bad shape. From what I have read this sounds like tartar build up and it sounds like he will probably have to be put under anesthesia to have it cleaned off. Have any of you had this problem with your yorkie? Is it an expensive procedure and is it safe for the dog? He only weighs 4 pounds and it scares me to think he might have to be put under. |
that's definitely tartar and it most likely won't come off by anything you do. he needs a dental. i had one done on morgan back in august and it cost about $300 maybe less. perfectly safe. after the dental try to keep up with his teeth. since he won't let you brush them, get a spray like petzlife or something you can put in the water. anything to help a little. |
Yorkie are notorious for having bad teeth and tartar buildup. It would be a very good idea to get his teeth cleaned. My vet charges about $100 but depending on where you live it can be much higher. |
Did you adopt him from a rescue? He should have had a dental done before he was adopted. If it was a private adoption, I understand. As mentioned, Yorkies are notorious for tartar build-up. Before I became "educated" I wasn't careful about getting a dental each year on my Yorkies. My tiniest one paid the price.:( She probably had approx. 1/2 of her teeth pulled. Been more careful since then. Now I brush with C.E.T. toothpaste and rinse with C.E.T. dental rinse (not the breath freshener) every single night. Sometimes I am tempted to skip the routine, but then I think about skipping my dental hygiene and I do it for them. I'm hoping that my vigilance will pay off so I don't have to pay for a dental for four furbabies. |
Having yearly dentals is something everybody should have done. Not only can it lead to infection of their gums, but to their main organs as well. Especially the valves of their heart. Good thing for you is that February is National Pet Dental Month. Most vets offer a discount on dentals right now. Mine can't get my girls in until March, but she's still giving me the discount because I made the appointments this month. |
Ellie had a dental, xrays and nine teeth pulled for $600. Just a dental would be much cheaper. Please get it done though. Dental disease can lead to weakening of the organs which would be a much bigger problem. |
Thanks so much for all of the info! I got him from someone here on YT. They didn't have much time for the doggies, so I guess they just didn't notice :( I wish it could have been caught sooner, for Turtle's sake. I hope he won't need any teeth pulled...that would be awful for such a young dog! |

She does fine with it.:) |
CET Toothpaste... Where do you get this CET toothpaste? I am going to give it a try for my three other yorkies to prevent this from happening to them. |
I have started getting Ellie's from entirelypets.com. |
tartar buildup I paid approximately $177.00 to get one of my dogs teeth cleaned. She had bad tartar and terrible breath. Now clean teeth and fresh breath! Also I'm brushing their teeth every night now. |

After you get the teeth professionally cleaned, go to PetSmart and get some PETKIN liquid oral care. You put one capful in eight ounces of water every day and it really does help. it is odorless and tasteless. |
I called all of the vets around here and none of them are offering discounts for canine tooth health month. The average cost around here is $100-$150 (not too bad). One vet wanted $300!! I will also be getting one of his teeth pulled because it is loose. I will be so glad to get rid of that stinky breath! |

That is a big price difference. Is the place that charges $300 offering more (preop bloodwork, better anesthesia)? |
