Dental Vaccine??? Have ya heard of this?
 
Chewy needs to get his teeth cleaned and a few baby teeth pulled next week. The vet wants to give him this new dental vaccine. I have never heard of it before and I just want to know it's safe. I looked up on line and can't find any side effects. Any one know anything about it???:confused:

I have never heard of it but confess to living in the boonies. What is it supposed to protect them against?

Yes, but it's not that new. It was introduced in November of 2006. A vet who is a member on another forum recommended it. It is made by Pfizer:

I guess it is supposed to help with the tarter and the over all health of dogs teeth. I am sure you still have to brush their teeth. I just never have heard of it before.

The only thing I can tell you from my vet who has been using it, is that the shot is painful for our little ones and it is a shot that must be given every year.

He mentioned needing pain meds... but Chewy will be out for the teeth cleaning, and I'm not sure if he will need pain meds for this anyway???

I have heard of it and would not give it...
The last things our dogs need is another vaccine.
It protects against the bacteria that forms tartar, I belive (could be wrong).
The body needs to fight bacteria and not always be vaccinated against it in my opinion.
I say brush the teeth and get them cleaned if that is necessary.

Are they safe? If they are safe, how come it is not used on human or they actually do?

Rebel has had the vaccine. When I took him in for his annual checkup I told his vet that I was concerned about his teeth. They were dark looking.

The vet checked him out and told me that when Reb was younger, he probably had a touch of distemper (?) and that it caused his canines to be discolored.

He told me about the vaccine and Rebel got it. He had a cleaning and got the vaccine afterwards. He didn't seem to have any problems at all from it.

You know what chaps me about this the most? It's that, if you really look at the literature - and look at the presentations being done by the *good* holistic vets out there - you'll see that all the dental issues we NOW see in dogs are pretty much tied back to...you guessed it...VACCINES.

There was a huge symposia on this a while back - about dental breakdown being caused by vaccination, and it was fascinating. And now, a dental vaccine? I juzzzzzzz don't think I'm buyin' it yet....

I'm not sold on this vaccine. I had nver heard of it. I want whats best for Chewy.

this teeth cleaning will cost 4oo,oo and I was shocked! It is costing more then Sadie's spay!!!:eek: I have no idea how that can be but it is! I can't aford 400,00 x2 every year for my babies... If the vaccine works and I don't have to put my babies under for teeth cleaning every year that is one thing. But if it doesn't work or isn't safe, I guess we pay to get teeth cleaning every year if thats what it takes.

With good tooth brushing you should not need to get teeth cleaned every year. Every three years worked for my to 9 year olds (non-yorkies). Mandy at 5 has had one and Teddy and Krissy will be three this May and get their first cleaning. Chelsey will get hers next year in 09 when she turns three.
