Allergic To Flea Medication :confused:I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem. I am going on vacation and need to board my litlle one for 9 days. To prepare her I gave her a topical flea treatment (the kind that goes between the shoulder blades and at her bottom) on Sun. I noticed on Tues night she was scratching on 1 or 2 spots like crazy. I called the vet and she suggested I give her 1/2 capsule of Benadryl 2x a day. I have also been putting her pj's on her so she can't dig so deep when she scratches. Does anyone know how long it will take for flea med to get out of her system? I am assuming she is having a reaction to that since that is where the irritation is. I have to leave on Sat. and I just don't know how closely they will monitor her. Thanks for any advice I can get!! |
When a family member's dog had an allergic reaction to Sergeant's fleas products, the company said to bathe her in Dawn dish soap (original) and put vitamin e on her. That might apply here also... |
Have you tried bathing her to get it off?? Keep in mind that those flea meds are full of toxic chemicals, so if she had an allergic reaction to it, I would not use it again. Try giving her a soothing bath. |
If it is an allergic reaction (it sounds like one), they can get more severe with every application. They can be allergic to one brand but not another or some dogs can be allergic to all of them. If you must use one, make sure you have Dawn dish soap like Ellie May said and be ready to get her in the bath right away. You wrote you applied it between her shoulder blades and bottom. Do you mean back by her tail? I have never heard that before. Is that what the directions told you to do? I ask because you have to be really careful they cannot lick it (that is why between the shoulder blades is a good spot). She might not be able to reach the top by her tail but it can run down her sides. I'd stop applying it there. |
I agree...Which flea med did you use? It's important to find out the main ingredient so you don't use another product that his this ingredient again...I really hate flea meds :( |
