serving size Is one ounce of biled chicken (with veggies and some brown rice) too much to feed a 5 1/2lb Yorkie. Both my 2 scoff it up like crazy but I don't know if I am giving them too much for a healthy meal. I decided to home cook dinners daily and give them a small amount of kibble in the Am. Thanks in advance for the info. Tina |

are you suppliementing now that you are homecooking? |
I will start to.....I have to look in to what is good for them with the food that they like. I will be feeding them chicken, white fish and "some" chop meat. And of course veggies and a starch on a regular daily basis and for snack vanilla yogart and at time cottage cheese with their meals and of some fruits such as cut up apples. So I will definately need to suppliment. Tina |
How many lbs is she....I would also like to control their weight with the home cooking. Such as I would like Pucci to put on 1/2 to 1/4 lbs more and I would like GiGi to loose 1/2 to 1/4 lb. So I would like to increase GiGi's veggies and cut back on the starch and meat and do the reverse for Pucci. Tina |

so you are giving Layla 1/4 cup at each feeding does that include meat and veggies etc. because I am feeding my two about a cup with the veggies and they devour it maybe not a cup maybe about 1/2 cup...you know veggies are fluffy. Sounds like I am feeding too much. tina |
Ellie gets somewhere aroung 6 ounces a day. She weighs between 5-6 pounds and is fed entirely homecooked. A substantial amount of her food is grain though which is heavy... It is about 3/4 cup a day. I like counting calories because then you know exactly what they're getting. Are you adding linoleic (canola oil or olive oil...)? I cooked the veggies, mash them and drain well. It is easier to measure that way... |
i know what you are saying.. it is SO hard to tell... were your pups free fed before you home cooked?? the way i can tell if layla is getting enough at the begining (now she will just stop eating.. the novetly wears off.. i put out salmon tonight.. she woudlnt' touch it) i kept her kibble down... and if she went to eat it.. i knew i needed to up the amount.. but if your pups have never been free fed they will probably just eat it all :p I do not cook my veggies.. i just putt hem through a food chopper... how long hav eyou been homecooking?? if it has only been a week or 2 i think they will eat whatever you put down because this is new and exciting :p however if it has been a while i'd try cutting back if yout hink they are getting too much.. they will tell you.. Layla knows how to tell me when she is hungry (she looks up at the counter where i make the food) it's all playing aroudn with amounts... trial and error :) |
hey guys...I will be back on soon. still working trying to get it all done today/night so that I can ease off this stuff. I do need more knowledge about home cooking and I am gald to hear they get tired of it cause my 2 can download till they can't move.....not good;) . be back in a while. tina |
Great advice, everyone! My two are fed almost entirely home-prepared food too, though I give them most meats raw in their homecooked recipes. Emma is 6.5 lbs and gets 1/3 cup twice daily, plus treats, and a snack before bed of about 2 T. of kibble, or something else like cheese/whole grain crackers, or fruit and cottage cheese. Milli weighs 4.5 lbs and eats 1/4 cup 2x daily, plus treats. She does manage to get part of Emma's snack though ;) We started feeding Emma the 3rd "meal" because she metabolizes food really quickly, and will wake up in the middle of the night wanting to eat. If she has a little snack around 9-10 pm, she'll let me sleep until 6 :) Another thing to remember is that kibble is more dense than homemade food-the fresh foods in the homemade recipes contain more water. I account for that, and feed a little more homemmade food in one serving than I would if I was feeding kibble. |
but how are you feeding the 1/3 cup or 1/4 cup....do you make a week supply of say boiled checken with rice and veggies them freeze it in small amounts. I usually cook a package of chicken cutlets he defrost one whole cutlet at atime and split it between then add fresh cooked (now from frozen packages) veggies. Thatis how they end up with 1oz of meat..... how do I get the cup size meal? Hope I explained my question right:) Tina |

She would eat constantly if I let her.:) |
Ellie May.....I see Ellie is getting approx 6ounces a day...I have a scale so I can start to weigh their food. Do you know about how much meat she is getting in the six ounces. Tina |
