Seriously, Do Any Of You... Ok, I have an off the wall question. My daughter, my husband and I went half and half and bought my sister a yorkie pup about a month ago now, she took him to the vet and the vet puled the fur out of his ears. The vet told her that this breed is notorious for ear infections and the hair in their ears can keep the envirement moist and they need to pull any hair (fur) out of Coco's ears they find on the inside. Has anyone here ever heard of this or done it? She said when the vet showed them, he grabbed the fur and just pulled it right out and Coco didn't whine or anything, but then the vet had my sisters husband to do the other one and when he did it, Coco let out a yelp. I've never ever heard of anything like this before with any breed. Should this really be done? |
It should be done. They get used to it. I had gotten used to doing it for Lulu. There is a grooming powder that you can put a dab in there and on your fingers to increase traction to pull. You pull slow and easy. These guys yelp for anything. |
yeah, i'm pretty sure it has to be done... i have pulled little ones out of her ears.. but i can't really get it... i have the groomer do it... |
SOme vets do it and some dont. I have heard of this and I think its normal. I never do it, and Rocky is fine. But I often, once a day massage his ears and check if everything is fiine. |

My vet also said the hair needs to be kept out of their ears because they are prone to ear infections. My vet said some people pluck the hair out and it doesn't hurt and some people just cut the hair inside the ears. My pup doesn't have a lot inside her ear and we are able to cut it easily. I bought a ear cleaning solution from my vet that I use once a week and once a month I put a little mineral oil on a cotton ball and clean her ears. My vet also suggested (and we do this) that we are careful when bathing her not to get water in her ears and also never put anything down your dog's ear canal, like a q-tip, because you could hurt them. |

I have heard of this but I choose not to do it to lily and she has had only 1 ear infection. You just have to keep them clean and dry but I do know a lot of people do it and for some dogs it is probably best. |
Wow...I have NEVER heard of this. :eek: I typically shave the inside hair away when I am giving Tino a a trim. It would break my heart to hear them squeal as if they were in pain when vet was doing the "hair removal". Neither of my pups have ever had an ear problems. |
Yes... it should be done... I had tried to do it myself before and was too scared of doing something wrong. So Meka was recently groomed for the first time last month and the groomer put a bit of powder in her ears before doing it. She said it makes it a bit easier to pull out... and Meka had no problems :) |
I don't like pulling the hair out on Adie or her big sister Cassie (the shih tzu) I have the groomer clip the hair short. In the nearly 9 years I've had Cassie and the two years I've had Adie I have never had to deal with an ear infection. You have to stay on top of things and check their ears frequently though. Sometimes Cassie will actually get hair growing down into her ear that has to be pulled out of the canal and then clipped. I remember taking Cassie to this one groomer that pulled her hair out and Cassie would end up hand shy for at least a week after. She didn't let you touch her ears. I hated it and started requesting that they not do that. I later found a groomer that I love love love and she follows my instructions to the T. |
