Lightest Weight At Spaying I have a 5 1/2 month girl who at the vet last night weighed 2 lbs 6 oz. The vet had me go ahead and schedule her for her spaying in April. I stay in contact with her breeder and the breeder feels that I should wait about a year until she can get to her maximum weight. I tend to agree with the breeder. My question is, how small were your babies when they were spayed? Thanks! |
I also think that you can wait a little longer. Tiffy is now 1.5 years old and holding tough at 2.6 pounds. I waited and waited for her weight to be at least 2 pounds and have heard that for the smaller ones they can reach full weight up to 2 years old. |
Jewels was 4 lbs |
I'm glad you brought this up cause I was wondering the same thing. I most definatley want to get Maggy May spayed but first we have to get her all healthy and over these darn obsticles. |
She's large enough to be spayed. Just make sure you have bloodwork done, as well as a bile acid test, to make sure there are no underlying health problems that could make anaesthesia unsafe. As long as that comes back normal and you have a vet familiar with tiny dogs, she should be just fine. If you want to wait another couple months to see if she'll grow more, that's fine too...you can probably have any retained teeth pulled at the same time. I wouldn't wait much longer though as she may go into heat and your really want to spay her before she goes into heat |
I'm glad to hear you say that. KaCee is old enough to be spayed in April but I'm concerned about how small she is. This morning at the vet she weighed a whopping 2.2 pounds! |
My little Schmoo is just over 6 months and weighs in at 2.7lbs. and my vet will NOT do the spaying for another month or so, she feels that she is too tiny and would like her to put on a little more weight. I am sure that it depends on the vet for sure. I am more comfortable in waiting. But that's me. Good luck |
My pup was 6 months and almost 3 pounds. Our vet did blood work & a bile test before they spayed her. |
Star is 2.6 lbs.. she was spayed a little over 2 weeks ago.. she did fine. |
Momiji was about 2.5lb when she got spayed. (maybe even less....) She did good but my vet originally wanted to wait until she was 3lb but it seems she may not reach 3lb for a long time so we went ahead spay her. She was up and back to her usual self in couple of days. Please just talk to your vet and when you feel comfortable, do the surgery. You can never be too careful with our baby!!! :) |

Last week I had a tiny little guy neutered, he was crypt as he only had one down. He weighed at 8 months 1 pound 6 ounces and did great also. I guess I would have to say it deppends on how much experiences your vet has with the tiny ones. Also make sure they run a blood chemistry to make 100% sure nothing is wrong with her such as a cold or low blood cell count and so on before they do the surgery. It's best to have this done the day of surgery since so much can change with these little ones in a days time. Good Luck. |
