2 questions for my new puppy
 
My new puppy Emma is 12 weeks old and doing really well but I do have a couple of questions. First, how do I get her to chew her food? She is eating Artemis for puppies, 1/8 of a cup three times a day. She swallows it whole!! She acts like she is starving. Does anyone have any suggestions? Second, she is itching like crazy!! When we brought her home her hair was really soft and a little wavy now it looks like a brillo pad! I wash her with oatmeal shampoo but its not getting better. I can hear her at night itching. Can anyone help me?:questione

To get her to slow down, you can either feed her one kibble at a time, break up the food or feed her from a bowl with something like a rock inthe middle so she has to pick around it. They also make bowls with pegs in it to slow them down.

How long has she been on Artemis?
What was she eating before?
What treats is she getting?
Does she have fleas or mites?
Where is she scratching?
Sorry for all the questions. :)

She's been eating Artemis since we brought her home so 4 weeks. The breeder was feeding her Purina. I give her Charlee Bears (liver) and Eubanka biscuits for puppies for a treat. She doesn't have any fleas or mites and she mostly itches on her back and down her sides. Her hair is very dry and frizzy also.

Eukanuba products are full of corn and her already itching, I would switch to something else.

Artemis doesn't have many allergens in it. Chicken and turkey could be but Purina has chicken in it, so that probably isn't it. Actually, scratching the back and sides isn't a symptoms so much of food allergies. With food allergies they will usually scratch their ears, jaws, paws....

You are already using Oatmeal shampoo, so the only thing I can recommend is ask your vet because I would wonder about mites (sarcoptic or demodectic) if they haven't done a skin scraping.

Unless this started a few days after you put her on Artemis, then I would still suspect the food.

Tucker would eat his food whole (we use Merrick). My husband sprinkled his food with a little bit of water and now Tucker chews it.

Congrats on you new puppy. Tucker is 5 months and our first puppy.

They don't need to chew their food. Dogs in the wild gulp their food down (Wolf it down) to finish before some other aimal shows up asnd steals it from them.

As for the itching, I would suspect the food. Put her back on what she was on when you got her and cut out the treats, see if it makes a difference.

Fleas and/or mites can be hard to detect. You should probasbly have her seen by a vet.

The constant scratching can cause raw skin which can turn into dermatitis.

Do many Yorkies have Corn Allergies, that is interesting, I was feeding Nutro and now I am taking the corn out of my babies diet, the corn maybe what is making my little one sick (Have spoken to you on another thread Ellie May about Teddy)

This is why I am changing diets to take the corn out.

Are many allergic to Chicken ?

Some dogs are allergic to it and some are not. Ellie is. It isn't just a Yorkie thing. :)

It amazes me that many companys put CORN in what they call hypoallergenic food, if it is a known casue of allergy in some dogs I don't see why they put it in so many foods for sensitive dogs :confused: :confused:

Well, I checked her food and her treats and none of them have corn. The breeder was feeding her Purina so I hate to put her back on that. I think Artemis is supposed to be a really good food. Last night I woke up and heard her scratching. Her hair is now a mated mess! I am going to order salmon oil and vitamin E today and see if that helps. Do you think I should call the groomer to see if she can do anything for her hair? I can hardly get a comb thru it now! She looks like a big wire ball! :eek:

Since she isn't stopping the scratching anytime soon, I would call the vet.
Fish oil and vitamin E is great whatever the problem is.

These companies also put meat like chicken in their foods but they hydrolyzed (break the structure of the food down in a way that the immune system doesn't see it as a thread) it. They probably have a similar process for corn. It is a bit strange though. Why not just feed the dog something they aren't allergic to?

I totally agree with you WHY not just feed food they aren't alleric too. Words fail me sometimes.
