Yeast in ears, underside of belly, front paws... Hello everyone! Was wondering if anyone had to deal with their furbaby having a yeast infection on the upper underside of their body? Took Lilly in today to the vet's, because of an aweful odor that wouldn't wash out. Come to find that she has yeast in her ears, underneath her upper body, front arms, and paws......AND an infection on the underside of her body  I couldn't believe it!!! I was given pills for the infection, an oatmeal/ shampoo wash, ear drops, and a pain relief spray. Doc said that allergies triggered it. It is also going to be an ongoing thing, throughout her life :( I just wanted to know if other people have any tips for dealing with this type of thing? Any tips will be greatly appreciated. Needless to say Lil's is acting and doing great! Thanks!! ~Lil's mommy |
Poor thing. The meds should easily take care of it. First and foremost, I would look at her diet, big time! This should not be a "throughout her life" thing as long as you feed her right and avoid any triggers. What "allergies" is the doctor referring to specifically? |
From what I understand yeast is very hard to get rid of.Treatment is 2-4 weeks, depending what kind of yeast did they scrape it? Food would be a biggie for me too allergenic wise. They say an all raw diet should help:Acidophilus would help,it can be found in yogurt or pill form or in benebac just a few suggestions. If she has sores half vinegar half water then dab on the spots, should give a bit of relief also. or peroxide half and half (mixed) Benadryl would also help till you get it under control. Is cortisone in that pain relief spray? |
What is she eating? Has she been on antibiotics lately? |
Thank you for all the great responses! She did get her teeth cleaned, and 2 baby teeth pulled (they never fell out), and was on antibiotics for that. The vet didn't tell me specifically what "yeast type" it was but that allergies triggered it. She is eating Purina EN diet that the vet recommended (I buy that from the vet). She has been eating this for a year now. It has corn, wheat  i have heard it was bad... What recommendations do you feed your furbabies?? Thanks everyone :) |
If it started after the antibiotics, that could have just pushed the food allergy over the edge. Why is Lilly on EN? Does she have GI issues? |

So, the vet put her on Purina a year ago and she is now still on it? So, basically - the vet caused her yeast then? Argh! Just so you clearly understand what the vet is really saying.....yeast infections that are triggered by "allergies" are from food allergies. So, these aren't from, say, "generalized" allergies or environmental stuff - the chances of that are pretty much nil. What I'm getting it is: Purina is a crappy food and I feel really bad for you and your pup bc the vet --> 1) shouldn't sell that crap in the first place and 2) it's ostensibly through his care that she is now in the state she is in. If it were me, I would get her off of that food immediately - and I would do a "hard switch" (meaning, NOT gradual); you don't have to do a hard switch - but given her state, I would risk the digestive stress and just do it. Get her on either a premium kibble/canned (it is preferable to add canned to kibble bc of better nutritional value and added moisture) or homecooked food. Good kibbles: Natures Variety Instinct, Orijen 6-Fish, Wellness, Evangers, Canidae. There are others too - EllieMay's mom will have suggestions. Also - I'd suggest you get her on active cultures (like in yogurt) for awhile. Are you near a whole foods? You'd want to buy some that is KEPT refridgerated or it is probably already dead (unless it is processed in more pricey way). Here is one you can get online, I trust its potency as well: http://www.askariel.com/product_deta...emid=probiotic. I really do want to help, so please keep us posted. The reason I'm so concerned is the extent of the infection. Oftentimes, yeast goes undiagnosed bc it just "lurks" under the surface. Your poor baby's infection (luckily) became obvious enough that you knew it had to be treated - so on one hand, it's good bc you can tackle it; on the other hand, it's a pretty nasty infection - but I want you to know there are people other than your vet to support you (and, maybe better vets out there too). :) Take care, Ann |
Please keep a watch on your furbaby with this infection! Let me share my story - last spring, we put in a stone patio. We did not realize how harmful cement can be until Gabby! There was dry mix on the ground by the mixer we had rented that she walked through....then proceeded to go inside and begin licking her paws. The cement acted like acid on her poor paws and by the time we realized something was wrong, all of her paws were red, inside of her ears were red and parts of her belly. Took her to vet, he said infection had developed into yeast infection. He soaked her in a solution there at his office for 20 minutes, gave me oral antibiotics and cream to put on her feet. Unbeknownst to us, by this point, in scratching her face, she transferred the infection into her mouth which found it's way into her GI tract. Two days later, she almost died!!! She could not eat or drink anything without throwing up that Saturday morning so I rushed her back to the vet. Vet said if I had waited until Monday, she would have been dead. He kept her for 5 days on iv antibiotics, sent us home to continue what he had given me prior to her being kept there. It took about 3 weeks to get it totally cleared up. I'm not sure how your baby developed the infection but please know I'll be praying for a speedy recovery. As others have said, it will take time to clear this up but do what the vet has said do in the course of treatment. And if things get worse, get back to the vet. |

LOL, has the vet pushed one of your buttons?:p If the vet says this is from allergies then did the vet take her off the food or are they wanting to treat her while leaving her on the food? |

Ann, Great post!! I have Gabby and Gage on Nutro Lamb and Rice. To Lilly's mom: I used to feed Gabby and Gage a natural food Wal-Mart carried (we have NO pet supply stores here like Petsmart, Petco, etc) so I was limited to Wal-Mart or what vet carried. I joined YT in '05, did a lot of reading, and realized there was a better quality of food out there that was of more benefit to my babies than what I currently had them on. I researched lots of them through this forum and those who fed their babies what food and why and researched ingredients on the websites of the makers of the food. I picked Nutro for no particular reason and Gabby and Gage love it! And fortunate for me, a Lawn and Garden place here in town now carries Nutro so I don't have to drive an hour away to get their food. You can't go wrong with a high-quality food - and it is so worth it for our babies:) Best of luck and please keep us posted! |

Original Poster: Canned foods: Evangers and Merrick Kibble: Wellness fish I think it is or maybe Canidae if chicken isn't the problem |
All of you have been so helpful!! Much love from me and Lilly :animal36 I heard corn/ wheat were bad for yorkies, but I figured since Lilly didn't react (as far as I knew) and the vet sells it, it was okay. She was originally put on it because the Royal Canin she was eating prior was upsetting her tummy. The Purina EN is chicken and rice. BUT I will definately switch it to one of the foods recommeneded ASAP. I have a new baby as well,so home cooking is a bit hard for me at this point. It really makes me feel better to hear everyone's advice. It's nice support!! I will also do the yogurt thing, as I do have a whole foods here. Lilly acts as her usual self, but I know that she's itchy. Still red, her ears look A Ton better. I will definately keep everyone posted. :) Lizette |
