yorkie color blind? my 5-month-old pup Peanut has been able to go up and down our deck stairs for about 2-3 months by now. our deck stairs are steep, wooden, and there are about 15-20 of them. however, we have carpeted stairs inside and she can't seem to get the hang of them. we live in a bi-level so there is a landing in the middle and each set of stairs has about 7 or 8 stairs in it. the carpet is a dark green, and i can't help but wonder if she is having trouble with her visual depth perception.... we've tried a few different times and every time is the same reaction. (granted, we need to really try more so she doesn't become a "special" dog who can't do stairs.) she just stands on the stair and she'll go up one or down one, but very very slowly. she shakes even... any advice? |
Could it be the angle of the steps, are the on a steeper angle?.....My stairs are open and dark green but my Jack would not go up or down til he was almost three.....I didn't mind because if i wanted to contain him I just put him up there and he had the whole upstairs without having to be in a tiny crate...... |

LOL...the title of this thread threw me off a little b/c my first thought were, "Well, all dogs are color blind!" I have to wonder if maybe your pup is just young and needs more time? I'm really not sure as I have a one level house, but just judging based on what I know of a pup's development, I'm actually kind of shocked that an 8 week old pup was going up and down steep stairs at that age. Since our pups don't leave us at that age, I'm wondering if I should invest in some stairs and train ours in the future...lol. |
I had to teach Tia how to go up and down the stairs in my home...especially how to come down. our stairs are dark hardwood, so I figured with her it was a mix of fear and trouble with depth perception and distinguishing how far down to step. I would get down to her level, gently tap the step she was on, and move my hand down to the next step and tap gently on it to help her "see" how far down it was (and she was tiny back then!) Treats also helped her pluck up her courage. Now Tia is a pro and understands the words "upstairs" (she'll run up to the landing then turn back to me with a look on her face that says "aren't you coming up too?") and "downstairs". |
thank you! thank you all for your replies. they are encouraging and give me hope. i will be more patient with her, and we'll practice more! i will basically keep doing more of the same... treats to reinforce, and practice, practice, practice! |
