Post-spaying concerns We had our Yorkie cross spayed 3 days ago. She also had dew claws on all four legs. The vet ended up removing the front two but not the back to. From what I can tell this is the opposite of what should have happened. Three days after the surgery she is still very uncomfortable. She usually takes a few steps but then sits down quickly. She is always trying to get at her incision. We have had to keep the e-collar on her because the minute we try to take it off she is after her stitches. Does this sound like normal behaviour after a spay surgery? Her incision looks pretty good. I do not want to take her back to the vet because I am angry about the dew claws. How long do we need to leave the e-collar on? |
I am surprised they didn't remove all dew claws. I would be upset about this too-you might call and complain about this-you could either have them done later on, or at least get some of your money back! Did she have any pain meds after surgery? My two both did, and they were back to themselves within a couple days-but both were pretty tired for the first few hours at home. Did she go back to the vet the day after her surgery for a vet check? That is important to have her incision checked, so make sure you get her checked out if you haven't yet. For both my furgirls, I put baby onesies on them after their spays-it worked great to keep them from licking/chewing their incisions, but allowed air to circulate to help it heal. At this point-3 days later-her incision probably itches, so you could try the onesies, but if she's really bothering it, you may want to keep the head collar on her for a few more days. Your vet can probably advise after they check her incision. |
You should leave the e-collar on until the stitches come out. You could try putting a baby onesie on her instead. What pain meds is she on? |
The pain meds we were given is called Metacam. The vet didn't say anything about bringing her back for a checkup. What are the baby onesies and where do I buy them? |
I now see what a onesie is. If I put one of these on and take the collar off she will still be able to lick the stitches on her front legs where the dew claws were removed. Do I need to prevent her from licking these stitches as well? |

My Yorkie wouldn't really stand the day of her spay but was walking around some by the next day. Are her gums pink? Is she eating, drinking, pooping and peeing okay? Maybe it's her feet bothering her. |
She is drinking pretty well and peeing okay. She has only had one poo since her surgery. She isn't very interested in eating but she has eaten some if we hand feed her. |

I asked my vet if that was normal and she said it's probably because he feels uncomfortable and weird there... especially because it feels weird to them when hair grows back in the shaved area. After about a week, he stopped doing this completely. |
The Metacam could also be messing with him. I would call the vet if it doesn't get better by maybe tomorrow. I know it happens where they are lethargic, but I think after three days they should at least want to eat. |
just wondering how much does your Yorkie weigh? My vet won't do the surgery until she gains some weight-she weighs 2 pounds. Also- did you get a blood test done first? |
She weighs 5lbs and no they didn't do a blood test to my knowledge. She won't eat her regular food but when I mixed it with the vitamin supplement she did eat a fair bit. |
What kind of food should I give to my yorkie after spaying and teeth removal? Solid or soft? |
Lexi had some problems after her spay and developed a virus of some sort we had to go back to the vet for some antibiotics and a shot. Had nothing to do with her incision it looked wonderful. She did not have dew claws removed as they already had been. I understand you are upset and with good reason. But something else maybe going on. Is there another vet you could take her to just to make sure all is well. The vet that did my spay was not my regular vet as he would not do a older female. And there was no charge when I took her back for the office call. Hope she feels better real soon |
