Can someone please... Tell me a good balanced cooked recipe to feed Penny? She is going on 10 weeks. She gets canned food in the AM and PM mixed with her kibble. (Innova) I leave kibble out all day for free eating. But she doesn't seem to eat much of the plain kibble. Can they live without kibble. Do they need it for their teeth? She loves milkbone puppy biscuits. I figure it will help her teeth. I don't know much about how much protein etc. they need for a healthy cooked diet. Sorry, but I want to feed her what is best. And the commercial dog food doesn't seem to be safe anymore. Also, I read somewhere that garlic is bad for them. It is in the Innova food. |
The recipe I use is for an adult dog, so it might not help you much. I would not feed a dog food with garlic in it. There is some controversy over this but small amounts of garlic (not just large amounts) fed over a period of time have been shown to cause asthmatic attacks and even hemolytic anemia. There is no way to tell which animals this will happen to. It can be a risk to feed it in dog food, so I won't. Feeding kibble doesn't necessarily clean teeth. There might be a few studies that indicate this but these studies, as far as I have read, did have flaws. If kibble does help clean the teeth, it is certainly not doing a good enough job to warrant feeding it. Whatever you feed, it is important to brush their teeth. So while canned food might be responsible for some tartar, kibble does not do a good job of cleaning (unless you go with a dental veterinary diet). I can tell you that Ellie ate mostly kibble for 5.5 years and ended up with stage 3-4 (worst is 4) periodontal disease...9 teeth pulled. Awhile after surgery she was started on homecooked (all soft) and also gets her teeth brushed everyday and OraVet once a week. Her teeth are great now, so the kibble didn't do a thing for her. |
Thanks, that is certainly something to think about. I will keep searching for a homecooked recipe suitable for a puppy. Meanwhile, I won't feel so bad if she eats more canned then kibble.:) |
PM Suzy -- she can help you with homecooking for a puppy. If you're going to use the Innova, try adding a small bit of water to it. They need the extra moisture. My dogs love Innova |
OK. Thanks. But I am new to YT and I don't know who Suzy is. |

Yorkiedaze and marcerella02 also homecook. I think Yorkiedaze has done it for puppies. Or you can get a nutritionist. |
Thanks, I just PM'd her.:) |
