Help! My Yorkie Is Always Thirsty! My 5 month old yorkie is ALWAYS thirsty, when I give her water I give her just a little bit and she always drinks it too fast and then throws it up! Is she ok? How much water should I give her? She will be 6 months old on the 21st and is about 2.5 lbs. |
About one ounce per pound a day. A 2.5 pound dog should drink about 1/4-1/3 (and possible 1/2 which would be a lot) ounces a day. This will vary between dogs and is just a general guideline. They should drink less than this if they are eating wet food. How much is your dog drinking a day? |

Also, what exactly are you feeding - bc that can cause differing thirst too. |
She drinks about 2/3c twice a day, my other yorkie never had a prob with this he just drank when he was thirsty but she drinks and drinks and drinks |
when I left her dish down she will drink the entire dish if it is full and then throws it all back up and shakes for a long time |

Also, have you ever tried leaving water out for a whole week - and see if she adjusts to having it out (ie, she doesn't feel the need to drink drink drink bc she learns it will still be there)? |
When she eats and then she drinks all of my other yorkies water |
No, should i? |
Have you had her tested for K9 addisons? This may be a Problem.. I would talk to the Vet about this. |
When I first got her I left it out ALL the time. For about a period of two weeks and then she just kept getting sick. |
Ok I will make an appointment |
I want to make sure I'm not confused - SO, as long as you've had her, she's never had full (24 hr) access to water? If that's correct, then, if it were me - I would first try a full week or two of leaving water out 24 hours a day and let her learn that it will be there, that she doesn't have to be desperate about it. If, after 1 or 2 weeks the behavior is still there - get her to the vet and explain what is going on - they'll probably want to check for diabetes. |

Please get her to the vet and don't limit water at all until then. If it is something like diabetes insipidus, limiting it could be very dangerous. |
