Chubby Boy ... HELP! My little guy has gained weight over the last few months (the last time we were at the vet he was five pounds, but the vet wants me to get him below that because he is a small Yorkie. The weight that he was bets at is 4.2 pounds). Today he just seems to be such a little pudge. He has a fat tummy now and his little butt feels a bit too well padded. I can just barely feel his ribs. I'm kind of at a loss on how much to reduce his food intake to to make him lose weight. He gets 1/8th cup (2 Tbs) of Natural Balance Duck & Potato in the morning and again in the evening and I usually cut up a little apple or carrot shavings on top of his morning dish. He LOVES fruit for treats, but I also will give him Bill-Jack liver treats (no more than 2 at a time). I try not to overdo it with the treats and even have stopped stuffing his Kong because he usually blackmailed two Kongs per day out of me filled with fruit and Mother Hubbard treats (I used it as a "pacifier" when I was trying to work). As for exercise, he doesn't get a lot -- but when the weather was better I walked him maybe twice a week -- sometimes more. Since we are having such a rough winter in Chicago, I do not take him out unless it's more that 35 degrees out. Can anyone give me any Yorkie diet tips? I want my baby to maintain a healthy weight so I can have him around for many, many years to come. |
Im sorry... I wish I could:( Good luck:thumbup: |
wish I could help hehe, my boys a big boy too, 11 weeks at 3lbs. But i have no idea on diets! wish ya luck though! |
You need more fiber in the food. To help a dog lose weight cook up green beans, rice and low fat turkey. |
I think you should switch foods. The recommendations on the Natural Balance website are to feed 2/3-1 cup for an adult dog 10 pounds and under. Your dog is an adult, right? If I am reading your post correctly, you are only feeding 1/4 cup a day. Maybe this food isn't agreeing with him because if a 10 pound dog can eat 2/3-1 cup a day, a five pound dog should eat probably 1/3-1/2 cup a day. There will be some variation because dog food companies sometimes do tell you to feed more than you should. I don't think any dog should gain weight on 1/4 cup of food. Natural Balance makes a reduced calories formula. It could have been the two kongs a day doing it though. I would add green beans to the diet. |

LOL poor Buster is on a diet too. At the last vet visit my vet told me Buster was "massive" at 8 lbs. He has a fat roll over his tail....and what ribs? There are no ribs on my dog. He has to get back to 5 lbs. We've been giving him green beans in his food....he doesn't eat them...he just snorts at me in frustration. Anyhow the vet tech told me there's a McDreamy, a McSteamy, well now there's a McFatty. I guess he was trying to be funny:rolleyes:. I don't see where giving him fruit will be a problem. Apples have fiber, and try the greenbeans, maybe your little guy will eat them. |
