Denosyl/Sam e I was wondering if anyone has any experience with the drug Sam e, which i think is actually Denosyl. My 8 year old yorkie was put on it to help with his liver enzymes that were a little high. Our vet told us to give on an empy stomach. I have just been putting it in a little piece of food, and giving it to him first thing in the morning. Is this ok, or does he have to just take it without putting it in a treat. |

SAMe is the human equivalent to Denosyl, but they probably are taken the same... It has to be given at least one hour before eating. If you have to give it in a very small amount of food (one small bite just to get him to swallow), that is fine. Never break the pill or it is useless. It is good to always give water right after. Are his ALTs elevated? Did they do a bile acid test? |
His alt is elevated, bilirubin is fine. His alk phos is also high. We are thinking cushings disease at this point. Can you tell me what dose you give. MY yorkie is about 14 lbs. The vet gave us the pills and said give half a tablet in the morning. I looked it up and saw where you cant break them. That dosent give me much confidence in the vet(scarry). I need to order some and just wasnt sure of the dose for a little dog |
I don't know if you can break SAMe in half. I do know that you should never break or crush Denosyl at all. The insert says a 13-14 pound dog should receive one 225 mg tablet daily. |
