Blue Buffalo Wilderness????
 

I recently read that Blue Buffalo made a Wilderness brand... has anyone tried it?? Can we feed yorkies:aimeeyork this food product??:confused:

it looks ok to feed. its a high protein food like nature's variety and wellness core. a healthy dog will be able to process the protein just fine.

I am considering switching my crew over to this food. Has anyone had any problems with it? Is there any down side to the added protein? We were feeding Nutro Natural Choice - then switched to Life's Abundance because of all the problems with Nutro - now, I am reading that the Blue Wilderness is a better qualilty food (6 star rated as oposed to 3 star). What is everyone's opinions on this brand??

I haven't ever fed Blue Wilderness, but I think it's a good food. There is no down side to the high proten unless your dog has kidney problems. High protein will not cause kidney issues, but dogs with already exsisting kidney problems shouldn't be fed a high protein diet.

I think Blue Wilderness a nice kibble. Definitely a nice switch from Life's Abundance. :) IMO

Oh, thank you so much! I was a bit worried about the extra protein, but my guys do not have any kidney issues that we know of.

The whole dog journal, to which I am a subscriber, removed the Blue Buffalo company from its approved list in 2009 because the company failed to respond to an inquiry regarding disclosure. In 2008, the journal added "transparency" as a criterion for food approval. The failure of the company to respond got them removed.

As you know, I home cook but also use Merrick products. They make all their products in the US at their plant, use only human made ingredients and make full disclosures on their labeling, and you can see the food actually looks like home made food when you open the can. One of the RI area holistic vets actually recommends and sells Merrick canned. Mine eat canned mostly but also like the dry. They make a wilderness blend but my boys prefer Grammy's potpie and Turducken.

FYI, Life's Abundance did not make the list of Whole Dog Journal approved foods. I've never heard of this food.

I've heard of the Merrick, and agree that it is a good food, but according to this website: Dog Food Reviews - Main Index - Powered by ReviewPost Blue Buffalo Wilderness is a 6 star food, and Merrick is a 5. It is also carried at Petsmart, which is a big plus for me. According to this websiete, Life's Abundance (which I was buying online) is only a 3 star food, so I want to move up in quality.

Merrick does not use chicken meal and blue buffalo does. That's why I switched from Wellness to Merrick.

I think the rating system on that site gives Wellness and Merrick lower scores because they are higher grain foods than BB Wilderness or Wellness Core which are rated 6. They say they look for higher protein in place of grains. This is a subject of debate -- grains vs. no grains. Mine love their oats!! And potatoes, and rice. They are carb-addicts like their owner!!

Chicken Meal is a plus ingredient. Chicken includes the water content, whereas chicken meal doesn't. So the meal form is better since the company cannot include the water in the weight of the product.

Yeah, that is probably why. I guess a lot of dogs cannot process "grains", but mine do not have a problem there either. Unfortunately, Petsmart does not carry the Merrick brand. There is a small store in town that carries the wet food, but not the dry, so I was trying to get something that was sold at Petsmart, yet still a very high quality food. I also homecook on occassion for them, but I like them to have the kibble on a daily basis. Ah, I wish Petsmart would carry more of the better brands.
