Jambo just got castrated... Jambo got castrated yesterday and both my mom and I were balling when we had to drop him off. He got 5 puppy teeth removed at the same time. The vet gave me some pain meds (Rimadyl) but I can tell my poor little baby is in pain. He hasn't taken a pee since we came home last night. He doesn't have a lamp shade on as the vet said his stitches are inside and he glued sutured the outside but I am afraid of him jumping on the couch and hurting himself. I asked a lot of questions but the vet's office didn't tell me too much of anything in detail. I am to keep in from walking/jumping, it is okay for him to lick his wound, his appetite may be suppressed but feed him as usual, etc. Baby had 5 teeth taken out! They didn't even ask me if he ate kibble or canned. I grounded up his pain meds and put it in with some chicken soup for him. He has the shakes and his face looks tiny and miserable. I just want to keep crying thinking of all the pain and discomfort he can't fully express. Any suggestions on things to do during recovery is much appreciated. |
Rimadyl is a very strong med, so I'm not sure why it's not working. I would not let him at his incision at all. He should either wear an e-collar or a baby onesie. If he chews it open or it gets infected from licking he will have to go back to the vet. |
Ohhhhh poor Jambo. Teddi was crying when she got fixed and I gave her 1 pain pill and the next morning she was fine. She got her teeth pulled another time but she seemed fine to me by that nite. I just gave her soft food for a day and she was fine. Hopefully he will be feeling a lot better by tomorrow! (sorry I missed you guys the other nite!) |
We got there right when you left. The traffic was a nightmare! His vet's office said it isn't a big deal for him to lick but I can get a collar for him if I want the peace of mind but it can be stressful on dogs. I've been wrapping him like a burrito in his blanket so he can't get to it. I guess the meds are working but it's hard to tell with these little ones. We've been spoon feeding him and gave him water but he hasn't gone to pee yet which worries me. I tried to put him in his litter box with his pee pee pad but he just stood there shaking. I want to get him a little sister but I don't know if I can handle putting another one through all this. I am a total wuss! |
I know what you're going through. Right after the surgery my baby's head looked like half the size it was before surgery. He had an undescended testicle so the surgery was more invasive than a regular neuter. Make sure you keep him warm and comfortable. I cried when cocoster peed and pooped for the first time after the surgery (pee took about a day and poop took about 2 days). He had internal stitches too but my vet told me to discourage him from licking the stitches for 3 to 4 days. I made him wear a baby onesie overnight. Don't worry. He will feel better real soon. :) |

Sorry to hear he is feeling badly. Be careful giving chicken soup unless you made it yourself. The stuff out of a can has way too much salt in it for a dog. Give him some soft food and like the others said, some boiled chicken/rice, plain. He should be better in a couple days. |
Poor little Jambo. I hope he feels better soon. |
Hoping Jambo is feeling much better by now. It is so hard to watch them when they arent up to par and in pain. |
24 hours later he finally pee-ed and boy did he pee! He must be feeling more like himself again because he is trying to run around and jump on the furniture. I try to catch him beforehand but how do you tell them they need to calm down because of they just had surgery and they need to be careful with their stitches?! He had 5 puppy teeth extracted at the same time but this must not be bothering him as much because he is in the chewing mode already. The sutured area doesn't look swollen and has begun to scab which I guess means it is healing. I tell you.....I wanted to get him a sister but I don't know if I can handle this part again. |
Ziggy's area looked horrible-like a huge purple plum after his neutering. I thought the vet must have butchered him but within ten days the swelling was gone and it looked fine. Best wishes on a speedy recovery to little Jambo. |
If he continues to jump, he needs to be crated if you can't hold him.:( If something bursts open on the inside, surgery might be necessary. |
How will I know if something bursts inside? So far I have been checking the area several times a day and it looks to be fine. He is a pretty active dog and loves to play so he doesn't stay still too long. Oh goodness....... |

I totally understand it is hard to keep them still. I couldn't crate Ellie either because she would've peed on herself and couldn't have a bath. I held her a lot of the time. She did jump about 3 feet a day or two after surgery and did fine with it but it was not good.:( She could\'ve gotten seriously hurt. I believe too much jumping could also cause an abscess or pus-filled "thing" to form on the inside that might have to be drained. |
I\'m so glad that he is coming through this okay! I am dying here at work until i can get home to Sadie! DH is on his way now to pick her up. it is a little later than expected but the vet said he needed to give her some pain meds. i know exactly how you feel with all of this. i want to get Sadie a playmate eventually but i don\'t know if i can deal with all of this either. Once is hard enough! |
