Food allergies? Some of you may remember me finding this place out of desperation in trying to find out what was wrong with my yorkie Kassie. She was diagnosed with food allergies and we were told to feed her Royal canin skin support and nothing else for ten weeks. It has been four months now and she is doing great. My question is what foods are least likely to cause allergies that we can slowly introduce back into her diet. Veggies, chicken, fish ? I would also like suggestions as to a better brand of dog food that is safe for allergies she is finally almost finished the bag of royal canin. Thanks in advance. |
Anyone? Especially looking for treat idea that you think would be unlikely to cause allergies. Even if it is something I have to make , Kass just isnt happy without treats. |
if you want to put her back on a premium dog food try proteins that are "rare". no chicken, turkey, beef, or lamb. Try venison, rabbit, fish, bison, ect. also no corn or wheat productions. stay away from grains. |
Thanks Kalina that gives me somewhere to start. I googled but didnt manage to come up with much. |
natural balance, nature's variety, and solid gold have these types of proteins for allergy dogs. solid gold wee bits (which i feed) is bison and salmon. |
With any luck I can find those here. Thanks again |
You've got to find foods that have a protein and carb source she's never had before, like whitefish and sweet potato, venison and barley, etc. Then make sure you rotate foods regularly so she doesn't build up an intolerance to those, too. It's the constant exposure that makes them build up antibodies that cause the allergic reaction. I'm so glad she's better! |
Thanks Ladymom, I have seen sweet potato treats and wasnt sure they were okay now I can at least give them a try. |
Has your vet suggested adding fish oil to her diet? Lady has bad allergies, both food and airborne, and my vet suggested fish oil years ago. It boosts their immune system. It has made a huge difference for her. http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?articleid=666 |
My vet told us to give her nothing besides the royal canin but after reading posts here I dont think it is the best choice. I am going to try petstores this weekend looking for some of the better choices given here as well as fish oil as a supplement. I also have to find something for treats, Kassie is not happy and has never given up begging for them. Thanks again for your help I really appreciate it. |
