Neutering a five month old Yorkie Question: My vet said my lil guy could get neutered at the age of five months. Not sure how i feel about this, don't know enough to make a decision. However, will it help with housetraining? does anyone know? My guy is 17 weeks old and i have to confine him or else he will pee and poop everywhere. now we are confined to the kitchen, which is a real drag, b/c i don't like sitting in here either!! but it does prove to be effective.... |
Chewy was fixed at 6 months.. I know he had a few accidents for a few days after but went back to normal. He was pretty well potty trained by then. I think I would wait till 6 months if I were you. If you want to let him on the couch with you put his harness on with his leash... Put some thick blankets down that you can wash if there is an accident. (When chewy was very young, I wold put a pee pad down, and a towel or light blanket over it to bring him on my bed. That way you can cuddle and if there is a problem it's an easy fix. Just make sure you keep him on the pad, or the blanket. It works fine, and you get to have fun with your pup. (Take him out often that's all...) |
The best time to have them done is between 5-6 mos. as soon as my sons turned 5 mos. in he went..and he really settled down a lot after that..he's only 3 lbs. so pretty tiny little guy..I would do it as soon as the vet will do it. |
You can neuter a dog as soon as the testicles are in the scrotum and is at least 2lbs. May vets will neuter at 12 weeks and even earlier. |
I'm planning on having my boy neutered in the next 2-4 weeks. He is 4 months. |
Blaze is going in to be neutered in March. He will be six months old then! |
Neutering doesn't help with housetraining. That is a learned behavior and it has to be taught to him. What neutering helps with or stops from ever beginning is marking their territory. Which is even worse because once started he might never stop. |
My vet won't neuter until 6 months but I wish he would do it at 12 weeks. |
These babies are so small as it is... why not wait till 6 months and give them the extra time to grow up a bit. Chewy was so tired and sore. I think 6 months is early enough.:( |
i thought they had to be 6-9 months 12 weeks is WAY too young to neuter a dog |

If you are concerned about growth plates then I think you have to wait til around a year. I would never spay/neuter at 12 weeks but it is possible. The earliest I would consider it is maybe 5 months. That isn't based in science though, it is just my opinion. |
If I ever get a male, he'll be neutered as soon as I bring him home from the breeder...probably 12-16 weeks...DEFINITELY no later than 16 weeks. I see too many people posting that their 12-16 week old is starting to hump and lift the leg and I'd like to head that off before it begins. There is absolutely no problems with neutering before 6 months. 6 months has just always been the traditional thing to do and some vets are just set in their ways....but most newer vets spay/neuter earlier than 6 months. |
I thought I would check just for the heck of it...I found a young vet in the area, he said the same thing 5-6 mos. The only way they will do it sooner is for the animal shelters(they have to be spayed/neutered) and sometimes 4 mos, but, only if they're marking..He said the same thing as my other 2 vets, that with smaller dogs, they like to wait until they're a little older...Usually they don't mature until 5-6 mos. so, that's why it's best to wait, plus if you wait until that age, and they have to have teeth pulled, they can do that while they're in there being neutered/spayed |

I agree, I would NEVER put a puppy though this before 6 months myself. Chewy hardly ever humped any thing, and I know some dogs that hump even after they are fixed...Chewy never marked anything...and he was neutered at 6 months. I was a wreck at 6 months putting my little guy under. And he was about 4 pounds by then.... imagine taking a tiny 12 week 2 pound little baby in to go through this ordeal just because you don't want to wait!!!! There's no way I would unless there was some life threatening reason to. |
