Snow Salt and Paws? I was just wondering what everyone does regarding walking your dog and snow salt? It gets in Milo's paws and then he lifts up the leg and wimpers because it hurts. I was just wondering if anyone had a solution to this problem. We have tried the booties and they did not work he sat down and took them off as soon as I turned my back. Thanks for your suggestions |
i havent walked her in snow she is house trained but i did buy her doggy boots for the occassional times we will want to take her out there to play |
its very important to keep him off the salt it burns there pads keep on trying the boots put a treat in front of him he may walk backwards before foward lol make sure if he goes on the salt you pick him & wipe his paws right away |
Your best bet is to stick with boots. I had bought a set at petsmart for Tia and returned them because she wouldn't keep them on. Finally I bought a set of Muttluks. They come with a pamphlet with tips. Tia now loves going outside...the boots rarely come off and if they do it's because I didn't strap them on tight enough (and they do need to be tight!) I highly recommend that brand. |
Yes this is a big problem this time of year. Poor Buddy goes threw it also. I try to walk him on the grass most of the time when there is ice and snow to prevent him from walking in the salt. There are times I can't prevent it and when he whimpers I carry him and brush his feet off. I tried the boots but he always lost one or two and I had to backtrack to find it! Pain. I do put vaseoline on his paws at least once a week to prevent them from drying out and cracking. It really does help. |
oh i think they have a spray or something to put on the paws heres the link http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produc...CID=C12188x007 |
We bought the spray (a different brand) and used it once then threw it out. It basically coated Ziggy's paws with canola oil. After the walk we had to clean his feet because he was getting oil stains on everything. Personally, I think that smearing a layer of vaseline on the pads before a walk would do the same thing. |

Oh heavens! Why the heck did I not think of that:confused: Talk about a dumb blonde! I'm talking about me. I use it AFTER but never thought about BEFORE! DUH as my kids would say.:p |
We continue to walk as much as we do in the summer and deal with the salt issue every day. Here in Nova Scotia it has been a very snowy winter and road salt is everywhere. I've tried the boots and protective spray. Now I just make a point to stick him in the tub and wash his feet in warm water after every walk. The warm water also melts all those little snowballs that stick to his coat. His feet show no damage at all from salt. Can't wait for spring! |
Thank you all for all of the suggestions I still am not sure what I am going to do. Today when I saw salt I just picked him up and placed him down where there is no salt. I forgot to mention that a year ago Milo had Hip surgery. He was born with shallow hip sockets and the Vet told me he might need the other hip done one day and maybe not, so I am very hesitant with the boots and moving his legs myself so much. I am always afraid I am going to hurt him. I know it is all in my head he runs like the wind and jumps and plays like a crazy man. I just can't help but worry about putting the boots on his back legs. |
lemme check around...there is a gel that goes on that is not greasy...I need some for zoey too. I want to try shoes but shoot I put on some pjs on her last night and he didn't want to bend her knees. |
