My new Yorkie overweight? Ok, my Yorkie is 11 weeks old and weighs 3lbs now, he seems thin and a good size to me, but why do people keep telling me he's overweight? I'm a new yorkie owner, and he seems small to me... but then again, everyone that said he was overweight was usually in a puppy store carrying rather tiny Yorkies themselves. Sorry if this question seems strange, I'm new to it and wondering if I should ask the vet about this (I saw him last week and he didn't seem to say anything about my yorkies weight). He's happy and healthy and runs around and very loving, I feed him royal canine puppy 33 twice a day, I'm just worried I'm doing something wrong and wanted to double check since everyone here knows way more than I do lol. Sorry if my question again seems a bit stupid, I picked the largest Yorkie of the litter, he's just so cute!. Thanks :) Sincerely, The newbie yorkie owner. |
I don't think your Yorkie is overweight at all. If you can still feel his ribs, he's probably at a healthy weight. Those people are probably all people who contribute to the teacup society. Sorry, just because my Yorkie weighs 3 lbs (which is TINY, btw) does not mean he's some kind of monster. :p |

I agree with Diana. It is probably the people with tiny yorkies that think any yorkie over 3 pounds is huge. Your vet would have told you if he thought he was too heavy. I'm not even sure how you would get an 11 week old puppy to be overweight. You would have to be force feeding it junk food. :D |

I love his name. :) I've never fed mine royal canine but I know some people have said it made their dogs itchy so I thought I would mention it. If you end up wanting to change it, you can do a search to find a lot of good information about dog food. |

I'll look into different foods. |
You double his weight at 12 weeks and that gives you his estimated adult weight. I dont think he is big at all. I think he will be 6 1/2 to 7 lbs |
If he was like my new Pommie Bijou then he will be fat, this one I cant even feel a bone in his body only blob:eek: at 7.7lbs working on his diet to trim him down with lots of exercise. Mine shoul dbe 1.5 kilos at this age not 3.5 I think 1360gm is a good size for your little one. Dont study what others say ok:D |
Teddy Coco is 17 weeks and 5.6 pounds. I asked the vet the other day if she thought Teddy was overweight because although he's slim everywhere he has a tiny little bulge in his tummy. She said he was fine and that the belly may be because he's full and has just eaten, that it didn't feel like fat. Hope that helps! |
Thanks :D, yea I went to the vet and he said Henry was a good size for a Yorkie, and healthy. He's been eating good portions and you can feel his ribs, I feel better now after reading your responses and asking the vet about it. I guess the people who mentioned he might be overweight who have seen him are just used to smaller yorkies, I assume I mean, not sure. As long as he's healthy, I'm fine with it :) afterall I did pick one of the chubbiest boys of the batch lol, he just had the cutest little face! |
I have had my baby Lex for exactly 2 weeks now and today he is 13 weeks old. When I took him to the Vet he was 11 weeks and 4 days old and weight 3.3. The vet told me everything was perfect. When I was at the vet's office people thought he was too big for a 11 week old Yorkie which honestly got me kinda mad. I would just reply by saying he is a standard Yorkshire Terrier who's father is a champion.xD That shut them up. Henry is totally adorable so don't let anyone tell you otherwise. The problem is that most of the people here in Miami are used to seeing the tea cup size. My breeder told me Lex might get to be a 6 pound baby. So maybe yours will be a 5 pound baby. |
My Biggie weighed a little over 3.3 pounds at 11 weeks old. He was and still is healthy as can be. He is 1 year and 1 month old now and he currently weighs 8.8 pounds and we love every bit of him. He is not overweight, he's just a little bigger than the standard Yorkie. After some research, because I too was concerned about his weight I found that there is no fail safe method to determine how big your yorkie will be when they become adults. Heck, Biggie's Mom weighed 6 pounds and his dad was 4 pounds. There was no way for us to know he would grow this big when we initially picked him out of his litter at 4 weeks old. |
