Eating and Portion Size I have a near 4 month old pup. We have been feeding him a total of 1/2 cup a day, splitting it into 3 portions. He is on Merrick Puppy Plate. The last week he has only been eating 1/2-2/3's of his portion, then gets disinterested. I'll then put a little water in what's left and he'll come back and finish it. He's such a nerd. Anyways, my question is. At 4 months (~3.25lb) should he still be eating 1/2 cup a day? If so, should I be feeding him two or three times a day. Thanks for your help. |
as a puppy, i fed lexi 3 times a day when i could.. |
3-4 times a day:) |
Hmmm, well I guess he'll eat what he feels like  |
I would want him to eat at least the minimum amount recommend on the can for his size. As long as you can get him to eat that much (or maybe a bit less), it should be okay. That is what I would be comfortable with but some dogs just don't like to eat. |
I feed merricks and I thought it said 1/2 cup 3 times a day. |

See this link for the recommended daily amount from Hill's: http://www.hillspet.com/hillspet/pro...O_n_orig_USARG I find my puppy being more and more belligerent of eating his food everyday :(. Picky Yorkies! |
Blaze is 5 months old and I have had him since Nov., he will only eat twice a day. The breeder was feeding him 3x's per day but even she said he would barely touch his afternoon feeding. He hasn't changed since. He gets 1/2 cups per day and in the afternoon (since I am still trying to get him to eat) I give him some cottage cheese w/apples and bananas! |

Sadie is 18 weeks...(41/2 months) And I just stared free feeding her. She used to eat like a little tiny piggy! Now she is not so interested in food, so I free feed and it is so much easyer...The only thing is I have to watch, and some times encourage her to eat. Sometimes at night I offer 2 teaspoons wet food to make sure she has enough to get her though the night...She really has cut down on her eating. She used to eat like a horse! |
Scrappy is on free feed... at first he was eating less than 1/3 cup of food a day, but that's gone up - only I'm not positive how much! (My kids like to make sure there is ALWAYS food in the food bowl, so they help by dropping in a little bit regularly.) It just seems like he's eating more and his little belly seems to be chubbing up!! I'm going to wait until the next vet appt (2/25) to see what she says about his weight-eating-size, etc. I figure most dogs are going to eat when they're hungry and stop when they're full... ? When my Yorkie was a puppy, I feed him 3 times a day at 12 weeks old. He doesn't eat much when it comes to kibbles but the vet said to let him eat as much as he could in 15 minutes. It is okay with puppies. They do need the food to help them grow. They will stop if their full. Later on, I just resorted to feeding him wet food mixed with cooked food. He doesn't pick when it comes to wet and cooked food because it is tasty and unlike what everyone says, fresh food is always better and less nutrition being destroyed. He has been doing fine on it since and doesn't pick. |
