Raw Heid Bones Are the raw heid bones bad for the dog. Ruby loves chewing on something and I figured those would keep her occupied and away from the furniture. Is there another object that yorkies chew on to help maintain their teeth? |
Rawhide bones are a big NO-NO...they can expand in their throat and obstruct their airway as well as cause intestinal problems!! I buy nylabones..for Maximus to chew, also you can get bully sticks which are 100% digestible but smell stinky, beef tendons, or edible nylabones (I buy bbq flavor), also try a kong..you can fill with lots of stuff and it takes a while for them to get to the middle!!! |
My vet and breeder told me to stay clear of raw hide. It can make them very sick. I know a lot of people who had to have their dog's operated on because of it. One case was that of my landlords. They own a Lab/Rott mix (big dog) and she had gotten sick for a few days - not eating, lazy, warm nose. Then she pooped out blood and they rushed her to the vet. He did some tests, blood work and x-rays and it turned out that the raw hide got backed up in her system. They had to surgically remove the large mass it formed - sort of like a mass of gum but it was raw hide. So I would recommend to stay away from it - especially w/ little dogs. |

Both of my dogs chew on raw hide/hooves without any problems. They get either a hoof or a raw hide bone once a week and it lasts them pretty much all week. They love them. And when we first got Dozer I asked my vet about them and he said as long as we watch them while they're chewing on them, it's fine. I never give any toys/treats to my dogs without watching them |
