Walking For Exercise - How Far is Too Far? I'm hoping to get back to walking for fitness and would like to do 3 miles 4-5 days per week. Is this distance okay for an 18 mos. Yorkie? He's 5.5-6 lbs and VERY high energy!! We would work up to the 3 miles, not start there. What do you all know/think? |
(Long Sighhhhhh) I wish *I* could walk 3 miles a day  . Well, I guess I *could*, but .... One thing I've noticed about Yorkies: they don't weigh squat. So, if he gets tired, just pick him up and carry him the rest of the way. A little extra bonding time, and a little extra cardio for YOU! Works out for both of you :D |
That should be fine! My moms yorkie is 2 and they walk all over town together! id say at least 2-3 miles and he does fine. He is also very high energy and LOVES to walk! |
Yorkies are huge dogs in a tiny tiny package. they can walk as far as you can just make sure to provide lots of water afterwards and a little snack and a nap. |
I don't see a problem, if they get tired out you can just carry him , their so little it wouldn't be much strain on yourself:) |
I have read in my yorkie books that you can condition a yorkie to walk up to 9 miles a day. Of course you need to increase the walk time gradually, and not all yorkies will comply (Tina just sits down after about 3 blocks  ), but if you start working up to it you will know what your pup can handle. Tbone, about the same size as you described, can go for over an hour at a time, and still be worked up enough to play afterward! |
Angel will be 2 next month and we started walking her once or twice a day at about 4-5 months old. When she lagged or appeared tired, we would pick her up for a while and then set her down after about 5-10 minutes. She quickly began walking nonstop 1 mile twice a day. Now we are up to 4 miles in the morning and about 1.5 in the afternoon. Always she ends the walking pulling me so I know she is ok, but she runs to the water dish as soon as we get home! Mort |
