Can Riley get sick from me??
 
I'm extremely sick and I was wondering if Riley could catch what I have. I think I have the flu. Ughhhh....

Also, does anyone know how I can get my fever down? I took a cold bath, but I don't think it helped.:(

We all have had the flu here BIG TIME this winter. When I took Maggy May to the vet shortly after we got her, I asked my vet this same question. His reply was, well, people say no, they cannot get it, but I'm here to tell you I've seen it enough times to know better and I say yes, they can get it from you. So, while our skin kids and my hubby were all sick, I was like a mad woman going through the house cleaning and spraying stuff down with lysol (I cleaned with a mixtured of bleach and water) and I wouldn't let none of the kids or my hubby around Maggy May. Thankfully I didn't catch it and neither did Miss Maggy May. As for a temp, have you tried Tylenol, Ibuprofen or Advil? It's what we use here. Good luck. Oh, I had to go back to edit this, I had aslo talked to my sister in law about this 2 weeks ago and she said when they were all sick with the flu, her doberman got sick as well, they tok him to the vet and the vet said, he's got what they all had and they all had the flu.

Crossing my fingers here that Sam doesn't get sick, but I'd seriously keep the bleach and lysol out and keep cleaning door handles, counters, floors and whatever else ya'll touch a lot. I also used the hand sanitizer as well just as an extra.

I have to disagree with your vet on dogs catching flu's from people..My old vet and my new vet both said NO...there are only a few things people can get from dogs, but, none of it is sickness and vice versa. If that was the case, mine would have all been sick when I was sick and they were in my face...
OP, hope you get feeling better, don't worry about your dog getting sick from you..
Unless a mutation occurs as described, influenza virus strains are specific to host species. Human influenza only infects humans. Equine influenza only infects horses. Canine influenza only infects dogs.

Alternate from Tylenol to Motrin and lots of juice... not cold bath.. cool bath with rubbing alcohol in the water... dont dress to warm and not alot of covers... Good Luck....

They use to say put alcohol in the water, now they say don't put it in there, it absorbs through the skin..They changed that a few years back. But, do keep cool and try to keep from putting a lot of blankets on if you're chilling, your body needs to be able to get the fever out, and you keep that from happening by putting too many covers on you. You should never bundle a baby when they have a fever either..

this is true...the flu virus is host-specific. There are some diseases that can be transfered from dog to human and vice versa..but not the flu

I was told by our vet that "No, they can not catch the flu or common colds from us but that it is possible, (not probable) to catch a strep infection from us."

Also, be careful using Lysol to clean with, especially floors. The chemicals can be toxic and may be absorbed thru skin

Well, like I said, our vet said people say no, but he's seen it way to many times to know better, so, I'm sure you're bound to have some different opinions out there everywhere. I;d rather be safe than sorry. As for the lysol, I've used it for many years and have never ever had a problem with it with our furkids, of course I follow the directions and make sure the floors dry before they are allowed on it to though.

Yep. And if it gets too high you can take both of them at the same time. My daughter had a 104.4 fever two years ago and that's what they did at the ER. I guess you should only do that if your fever really spikes though. But def. Tylenol and and then Motrin every two to three or four hours. Hope you feel better soon.

I know that tonsillitis can be transferred from human to pet, as I have done this to at least one of my poor babies on a couple of occasions. :( You know you try to keep them away from your face, but then sometimes they just attack you with yorkie kisses...inevitably they get a tongue in when you're not paying attention. :D

Like I said, everyones got an opinion, here's my vets number if you wanna call and take it up with him: 330-658-4546 His name is Dr. Bolinger, he's in Doylestown Ohio. I trust my vet and if he tells me he's seen it enough times to know that it can happen, then I'll take his word for it. Have a nice day.

None the less i have 7 kids so if my furbabies can or cannot get it my kids can so i am gonna use everytyhing i can to keep that from happening :eek: I have a shark steamer that i clean my floors with is that good enuogh or should i bleach them? I know it won't hurt them because i have bleached them before i just want to know what is best:p


To the OP i hope you get to feeling better soon i know how horrible this crap is i can't help you with the fever thing because all i can take is tylenol and if it doesn't work i have to go in to the doc :( But my old ped. always told my mom to put me in a tub of cool water not cold. But then again when my sister's temp went to 105 the E.R docs put her in a tub of ice water :eek: Of course that was years ago to. Sorry that prob just made it more confusing didn't it :confused:

Hmm, I'm not sure which is best, the shark steamer or the bleach, I'm not familiar with the steamer, I'm sorry. How hot does it get? I used bleach water on my floors and lysol on all my furniture and then bleach and lysol on everything else I could wipe down. Maggy or I didn't end up with it so I must have done something right. I hope your kiddos (skin and fur) don't end up with it, it was some real nasty stuff that ran through here. Good luck to you and to the OP, I hope you feel better soon as well. Good luck!

Well it gets pretty hot when i first got it i wasn't thinking and right after i was done with the floors i went to take the cloth head off and the water on the cloth was so hot that i scalded my fingers:eek: And thank you i am sure i will start feeling better soon because i am now on antibiotics for the bronchitis but the flu part there is not much i can do :( I had to go to the e.r about 3am because it was so bad i couldn't breathe:( But feeling much better this morning the body aches are finally gone then again that could just be the lortab they gave me to :eek:

I'm not sure which one would be best to use, but if it's hot enough to scald you like that, I'm sure that would do just as well to, at least one would think so. I sure hope you get over all that sickness soon, sounds to me like you just need to try and take it as easy as possible.

me and my bf had the flu and martini didnt get it

take 2 asprins it brings a fever down and i know this may sound weird but it works...get rubbin alcohol and put on a pair of socks and put a towel underneath ur feet and pour some of it on ur socks and get a hanky or a towel and pour some on it and put it on ur forehead in an hr ur fever will be down to gone...its a family remedy

thats bs...i dont even use water with my alcohol and it still does the job like it had when i was a kid

maybe it's different with an adult, but, this is what the Drs say now about alcohol. NEVER use alcohol or cold water to sponge a child if they have a fever. This can cause shivering and a rise in temperature. Alcohol is a poison and can be absorbed through the childs skin. Also alcohol fumes are irritating

how things change from when i was a kid...i dont kno my family has done it with all of us and we turned out fine..they always have to ruin what works lol

I know, years ago, they used to say to do that, but, then when my last niece was born(17 years ago), my sisters pediatrician told her the same thing that I posted..about the alcohol being absorbed through the body, and that wasn't good..I've never done the alcohol bath(my Mom never did either), we've just always taken tylenol to break the fever..
