Free feeding How do you know your puppy is getting enough? Sadie is not as good an eater as she used to be. I have decided to keep the food down all the time. She seems to nibble through out the day but I am so worried she isn't getting enough! How can ya tell???:confused: |
I can tell by all the poop on the pee pads:laugh: I have to free feed also, because Luna is a nibbler. Izzy is getting fat though:eek: I don't know what to do! |
If you only have one dog then put a measured amount into the bowl in the morning and measure it again at night. But now I see you have two so that won't work. ;) |
I started out with not free feeding but my Rocco seemed to be so skinny (but always got a good check-up at the vet) so I started the free feeding because I think he plays so much he doesn't want to take the time to stop and eat a whole meal so he is definately a graizer (?sp). |
I'm curious too. I thought I'd free feed Scrappy so that he'd get enough... he's so young and everything. Plus, he doesn't just sit down and eat much. He eats for a bit and then runs off. I think that he typically is eating maybe 1/3 of a cup of food a day (plus lil treats when he potties on the pottypad). He's about 10 weeks old and weighs 2lb 8oz (as of the vet office on three days ago). I've been thinking about switching him over to a couple meals a day - just to try to time his potties better, but during the work-week it's hard to do much other than morning food and evening food (but he almost always ends up poopin in the crate... ) |
measure the food when you put it in and at the end of the day measure it again. |
I scoop out 1/2 cup of her food every morning and give her small amounts throughout the day. She will eat until she has a sick tummy if I give her too much at once. At the end of the day there is always some left in the scooper. |
i have two dogs so it's hard to measure how much puppy gets. I just make sure there is plenty so they both have more than enough. |
Mariah was at the vet last Sat on the day she turned 10 wks old - she weighed 1.8. We have been free freeding her. We have a bischon and cats that we have always free fed. I even leave her food down at night...but I am thinking about taking it away at night. Recently I hear her eating sometimes late at night and really early in the morning (while we are in bed) and I don't want her to get in that habit. Does anybody think it would be a problem to take her food away at night? I was originally worried because she was so small when we got her (a few days before she was 8 wks old). THANKS! |
When I used to free feed, I would measure out how much he was supposed to eat in one day. Example: If he was supposed to eat 1/2 cup per day, I would put 1/2 cup in his bowl in the morning.... Throughout the day, I could measure the food in the bowl to see how much he had eaten. If by the next morning, the food was not all gone, then I knew he wasn't eating enough... |

The reason I say this is because maybe she hasn't eaten all day because she's expecting to eat at night, and then she goes over to her bowl, but it's empty because you took up the food. Ya know?? |

I wish I knew. I was feeding Alphy in the evenings with Abby but since Abby's passing he's hungry, so I went to feeding him in the morning and at night and he still seems to be looking for snack. I need to do more research on here when I get a moment because I think I'd like to supplement him with food food. Like eggs, cottage cheese, etc. |
When Mi was on Royal Canine she seemed like she never wanted to eat cuz she didn't like her food so i would free feed her.. But now that she is on LA she loves it and eats it all up so now i feed her in the moring and then when we eat dinner they eat dinner then of course the treats through out the day.. |
