Not eating..
 

Lately Bentley has not been eating his dog food as much as he use to..he hardly touches it really and i can't figure out why.. anyone have any ideas?

I have heard that is pretty common among yorkies. I am sure that someone on here will tell us what to do!

when toby doesnt eat his food, i mix in a little bit of water to make it a little "different"....... (dont do this all the time though, because i guess they need the hard dog food to help clean teeth) after i mix in teh water he usually eats it, but if he doesnt than oh well.... he wont starve himself

Linus has been doing that too I think! Maybe it's in our water or something. If you figure something out let me know. He'll eat treats and nutrical but doesn't really want food...

coco did this when he was younger, then i switched him to another kind of food and atfirst he was trying to pull the same stunt of maybe if i don't eat it she'll give me something else? but when he realized that i wasn't changing it he eats and eats. so maybe you can just try leaving it one thing i know for sure is that they won't starve themselves.

Gucci also wasnt eating her food. My hubby was giving her table food. Since we stop she is being eating her dry kibble but you know she always tries to get some table food. I heard they wont starve themselve so make sure you always have food out for the pup to eat. You can mix some wet canned food or water with the kibble.

I'd watch him closely this week...Could he be teething? Check his teeth and see if any of them are loose or bothering him~

Gucci does the same thing, if I dont mix some sort of human food in with her dry food she will not eat it. I am tempted to just leave the dry food but if she doesn't eat I do get nervous and give in. The problem is when I go away do you think my kids will do what I do.. I DON'T THINK SO!!! LOL So maybe I should just leave the dry food. How long do they stay without eating?

My boys get picky once in a while, a great while, I warm their food for just a short time in the microwave and they chow down. Also there appetite does decline as they get to the point that their growth is slowing down, so that may be the problem. They do not need as much if they are not growing as much.

I thought about this today and it makes sense for both Bentley and Linus because of their age. Maybe their teeth are bothering them? Linus seems to be having a hard time chewing hard things lately...have you noticed anything like that with Bentley?

I am wondering if they get tired of the same old food?

I have a friend who spoils her yorkie more than i do ;)

Her dog even gets tired of chicken or steak after a few days.

Today I tried a dry food that I haven't given Shelby for a couple of weeks. She wouldn't touch it before but now (today :confused: ) she thinks it's yummy.

I know we aren't supposed to be changing their food but can we offer variety on a regular basis?

here's a weird one...but it will work..~ ok baby at times does not want to eat his food so what i do is i put his food in a bowl...grab one of his toys and play time begins..i throw the toy when baby comes back with the toy ill take it from him put his bowl in front of him and he eats some and i just repeat it until he is done it works all the time~~ weird huh also you can try mixing some parmesean cheese with the food... try the toy thingy first then the cheese let me know if works...

*usually when i leave baby with one of my family member i get a call that he wont eat his food so i tell them to play with him throw toy when he brings it back take put bowl in front of him....and they normally say are you crazy lol...after they do it their like hey it works* good luck~ :dog:

Sounds very "yorky" of him. I was watching my pup this morning. She plays soccer/hide-n-go-seek with her kibble, I am thrilled when she actually eats a few. ugh

I had Muffin for 14 years. She would just plain get tired of the same thing day in and day out. A little variety won't hurt them.

If you have a little yorkie, add some water and maybe a little Gerber chicken baby food and stir it up good. When I first got Kacee, her teeth were not in good enough to eat the dry kibble, so we ground it and added water and a little baby food; stirred it up good and she ate it. Then she graduated to unground kibble with water and baby food stirred into it. Now she eats just the dry kibble and once a day I give her canned dog food.

its a everydat thing with baby.....we have to play play play before he will eat....their so stubburn......but hey at least it works.... :thumbup:

They should be eager to eat and make it all disappear on their own. If it was me, I would try different food. There is a reason they don't eat and that reason is generally that they don't like it. You know your own baby best, though.

I am having the same problem. I just bought my yorkie 2 days ago, they told me he was ready for dry food cuz he is 5 months, however he would not have it. Then they told me to give him chicken and rice dinner baby food plain first and then gradually go mixing in the dry food. he eats the baby food all up, but this morning I mixed in just a few balls of the dry food so he can get the taste and nothing. He also doesn't seem to drink a lot of water, therefore rarely pees, just like 3 times a day, my friend's goes like every 3 hours. Any advice would be appreciated...

I would try to do something different like putting some water on the dry. Or mixing it with some moist food. When my dogs are sick and not eating I give them gerber chicken sticks.

How old is your baby? As I said, mine just couldn't eat it at first simply because her teeth weren't far enough in. So, I ground her kibble, added some warm water, then added a little bit of chicken baby food. I mixed it all up and zap! it was gone. Then after awhile I quit grinding it and just added the warm water to the kibble, then a little bit of the chicken baby food, and mixed it up and she ate it, too. As time went on and I could see her teeth were in far enough, I just put down the dry kibble and it disappeared as well.

They seem to really like the Cesar puppy (wet) food, even though it isn't what is considered high quality. You can try mixing that in after awhile, too, before graduating them to dry kibble.

Some breeders may say they are on dry kibble, but you have to wonder...

As far as the water...did he come from the same area as you live in? If not, perhaps you need to give him bottled water for awhile. Water in different places has a different taste. If you think he isn't drinking enough water, give him water in a dropper or syringe.

You should be giving him a little nutrical everyday until he's eating well. It's available at the vet's office. Has he seen a vet yet?

He saw the vet the same day I brought him home. I am already giving him nutrical as it was recommended to me yesterday by the breeder, i just gave him dinner, i mixed a little of the dry food with the baby food and he ate it all up. :) so little by little I'll introduce the dry food until he only eats that. As for the water, we are from the same area and i give him filtered water not even tap. He's just becoming acquainted so its an adjustment period for both of us.

I usually cut up some green beans really small and mix it in Kelli's food. She DEVOURS it. She loves her some green beans, lol. I try to mix it up with something that she likes, in some way, to make it different for her. I've put little chunks of chicken in it before, too.

Lance, I wanted to welcome you to YT. Congratulations on your new pup. I hope your pup start eating well soon. It seems you are doing all the rite things. Always have Nutrical at hand cause this little ones can get hypoglycemic very fast. Do you have any pics of your little one? Everyone in YT loves pics, so dont be shy and post all the pics you want, ;) .

I was told by experienced YT parents, than if they are on quality food, then just put it down and they will eat. I was so scared to do this, but it worked. Maggie hasn't pulled a starving picky priss stunt since.
